Comics Should Be Cheap! (1/15/20)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kate’s Picks:

“Crisis on Infinite Earths Giant” #1 ($4.99) – With a mix of original content and reprints, this looks to be fun for both veterans of the Crisis and those viewing it on TV for the first time.

“Life is Strange” #12 ($3.99) – We’ve reached the end of Emma Vieceli’s adaptation of the video game, and all I have to say is: more, please. She’s done a fine job honoring the spirit of the original video game while crafting something completely new.

“Second Coming” #6 ($3.99) – This is another series where all I have to say is: more, please. In retrospective, the move from DC/Vertigo to Ahoy Comics has certainly allowed the series to thrive beautifully. Take a look at the letters page in the back of each issue for proof.

Total: $12.97

Jason’s Picks:

“Legion of Super-Heroes” #3 ($3.99) – So far “Legion of Super-Heroes” plot hasn’t really done it for me, but Sook’s art is really fantastic. I plan on giving it up until the end of this arc to see what I think!

“Second Coming” #6 ($3.99) – I’ve enjoyed “Second Coming” a lot and with this issue being the end of the first “season” I look forward to what happens!

Total: $7.98. Another short week, but nonetheless great titles.

Mark’s Picks:

“Hellboy Winter Special 2019” ($3.99) – Despite it now being 2020, here’s 2019’s Winter Special. This year the issue is packed with artists that have never worked on Mike Mignola’s Hellboy Universe before, and it’s great to see what they bring to it. There’s a Sarah Jewell story in there from Chris Roberson and Leila del Duca that really makes me want to see the two work together on a Sarah Jewell miniseries.

“Tales from Harrow County: Death’s Choir” #2 ($3.99) – This book is easily my pick of the week. I loved “Harrow County” and I love that Cullen Bunn seems to have found a way to give us something different, while still retaining that core “Harrow County” feeling. Naomi Franquiz’s art is such an excellent match for the material too—her watercolors, her character work, and her approach to horror are an excellent fit for the visuals Tyler Crook established.

“Skulldigger + Skeleton Boy” #2 ($3.99) – If there’s anything this issue hits home, it’s that Skulldigger is an asshole. This is indeed a dark time for Spiral City if he’s what the people call a hero. The way this story is unfolding, I feel like it could end up being one of the best “Black Hammer” spinoffs yet.

“Steeple” #5 ($3.99) – So, this is the end of the miniseries, but I’m really hoping we’ll be seeing more “Steeple” in future. Fingers crossed.

Total: $15.96. Apparently it’s a good week for Dark Horse.

Erik’s Picks:

“Undiscovered Country” #3 ($3.99) – I love the aesthetic of this book. It reminds me of the early 2000’s Vertigo comics like “The Losers” or “Y: The Last Man” (check out “Undiscovered Country” editor Will Dennis’ bibliography to know what I’m talking about). I’ve been craving this kind of creator-owned work and this book has been delivering.

Total: $3.99

Vince’s Picks:

“The Low Low Woods” #2 ($3.99) – I was kind of blown away by the first issue of this ‘Hill House’ imprint series. The way that Carmen Maria Machado and artist Dani achieve collaborative synergy in telling a story about this eerie little mining town with supernatural, surreal elements while never once being confusing or too clever for its own good. The comic presents you with sequences of events that you don’t immediately understand or even can’t be sure are real, and imagery that doesn’t yet have context, but it’s done in a beautiful way that teases the mind and enriches the world. “The Low Low Woods” draws you into its world instead of alienating you from it.

Total: $3.99
