Comics Should Be Cheap! (1/16/2019)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kate’s Picks:

Shades of Magic: The Steel Prince #4 ($3.99) – I’ve really enjoyed this prequel series of sorts from V.E. Schwab’s novels (and no, you don’t have to have read the novels in order to understand and appreciate the comics). This issue closes out the first arc of the series, and there’s a great deal of loose ends to tie up in one issue. But I know Schwab can do it, and do it with style.

Ironheart #2 ($3.99) – Give this series to a tween or teen girl in your life who is looking to get into comics. Riri Williams is fun, loves her tech, and does not suffer fools gladly. I can’t think of a better role model for 2019.

Goddess Mode #2 ($3.99) – I wasn’t too keen on this series based on the debut. The near future setting presented within is more reality than fantasy now. But, I don’t like to write off a new series until I give it at least three issues, so we’re back into the world of Cassandra and her Underground Superpowered Fight Club

Captain Ginger #4 ($3.99) – The fun of this series is just how absurd it is. And with the world being a dumpster fire these days, I’ll take all the absurdity I can get.

Total: $15.96

Mark’s picks

“Isola” #6 ($3.99)— Brendan Fletcher and Karl Kerschl’s “Isola” returns for its second arc. It’s on a new schedule now, switching from monthly to bimonthly, but this is a series that’s worth the longer wait between issues. One of the many things I enjoyed from the first arc was the visual symmetry between the opening pages of issue #1 and the closing pages of #5. Going into #6, it’s immediate that this call-back approach to composition is something “Isola” is going to continue to use, which is great for evoking a dream-like déjà vu feeling. As always, “Isola” is a very rewarding read.

“Black Hammer” #1: Director’s Cut ($4.99)— If you love seeing the process, this is definitely an issue you want to pick up.

“Gideon Falls” #10 ($3.99)— I’m holding off for #11 to come out before reading #7–11, but given the quality of the first arc, I’m confident in recommending this one blind.

Total: $12.97. A quiet week, but a good one.
