Comics Should Be Cheap! (1/22/20)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kate’s Picks:

“Wonder Woman” #750 ($9.99) – She is beauty, she is grace, and she will probably punch you in the face if you get on her wrong side. Here’s to 750 issues and nearly 80 fabulous years, Diana of Themyscira – – and another 80 more.

“Marie Curie and Radioactivity” ($8.99) – My day job is for a publisher of physics journals, so any graphic novel that helps spread awareness of scientific discovery to the next generation gets a thumbs up from me. And focusing on a female STEM pioneer like Marie Curie is a bonus.

Total: $18.98

Kevin’s Picks:

“Wonder Woman” #750 ($9.99) – As I have said time and time again, I am a sucker for anniversary issues and numbering. I love that books, more and more, are starting to change to these numbers or certainly nod to them on their covers in the case of Marvel. Diana reaching #750 is an amazing achievement and with this book both rumored to foreshadow 5G and celebrate what has come before it is a definite must.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” #1 ($4.99) – Speaking of definite musts, Al Ewing and Juann Cabal are taking over the reins of “Guardians of the Galaxy” this week and you mustn’t miss it! Ewing’s work on “Immortal Hulk” has been complex and dark and impressive, but also fairly self-contained. WIth this, and the upcoming “Empyre” event, it is clear Ewing is gonna be steering a lot of the Marvel ship for 2020 and that’s very exciting. Him too being paired with rising star Juann Cabal of “Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” and “All-New Wolverine” fame makes this an exciting debut.

“Excalibur” #6 ($3.99) – And lastly, my favorite Dawn of X book is closing out it’s opening arc. With that cliffhanger from last issue there’s a lot to look forward to as the fate of Apocalypse, Rogue, and Captain Britain are hopefully revealed.

Total: $18.97

Jason’s Picks:

”Heartbeat” #3 ($3.99)‒ With how great “Heartbeat” by Maria Llovet has been I feel as if it doesn’t get enough love. If you love amazing art, and a chilling story it’s worth checking out!

”Loud” ($16.99)‒ Hell yes I’m double-dipping in Llovet’s comics this week! After I started reading “Heartbeat” I feel in love with Llovet’s artstyle and storytelling. Then I started following her on Twitter and saw her talking about her upcoming graphic novel, “Loud”. I knew I needed it in my hands once it released. Now here’s to hoping my LCS gets a copy.

Total: $20.98. I was so close to it being only $20! But, I do have two dollars of change in my car, so hopefully that’s cool!

Erik’s Picks:

“Family Tree” #3 ($3.99) – I’m really enjoying Hester’s work particularly his figures. Now that we have the main cast assembled, I’m looking forward to seeing how this story progresses.

“Batman” #87 ($3.99) – It seems like Tynion’s “Batman” run will have a bit of a slow burn to it as his first issue didn’t introduce a central mystery, there was no flashy reveal on the last page, and no status-quo changing promise, etc. And, honestly, I’m all for it. The epilogue copying the first sequence from The Dark Knight was kind of annoying though.

Total: $7.98

Mark’s Picks:

“Folklords” #3 ($3.99) – So far Matt Kindt and Matt Smith have really impressed me with this series. My only frustration is with the monthly schedule. . . I simply can’t get the book fast enough.

“Family Tree” #3 ($3.99) – I find it difficult to put into words exactly why turning into a tree freaks me out so much―as a kid, I had nightmares about such things many times―but “Family Tree” takes that horror and makes it so much worse by not making the victim the protagonist. A parent, powerless to save their child, is so much more distressing, and it’s this central tension that really makes this series for me.

Total: $7.98.
