Comics Should Be Cheap! (1/23/2019)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kevin’s Picks:

Naomi #1 ($3.99) – I really enjoyed the debut issue of “Young Justice” and the beginnings of Bendis’ Wonder Comics imprint experiment. The most unknown quality of the books being launched debuts this week with “Naomi,” which sees Bendis, David Walker, and Jamal Campbell create a brand new character, a teenage girl from a small town who has an encounter with Superman. Bendis’ work on the Superman books has been really fun and additive, and so I’m excited to see what the connection is, and what Bendis and co. can do in adding to this universe.

Guardians of the Galaxy” #1 ($4.99) – The Donny Cates train at Marvel has been going strong for the last couple of years, and this seems to be his biggest book yet. With “Infinity Wars” over, and the Gerry Duggan-era finished, Cates and co-pilot Geoff Shaw seem to be rebuilding the cosmic side of Marvel’s universe and bringing a bunch of characters back together who haven’t been seen in the limelight like this since the mid aughts. I think we’re in for a wild ride.

Aquaman #44 ($3.99) – The Kelly Sue DeConnick/Robson Rocha run on “Aquaman” kicked off quietly last month, with a softer more character driven story. It reminded me a lot of the Rick Riordan Percy Jackson books with a character discovering they’re a demigod with a looming threat on the horizon. It was intriguing and fun, and I’m excited to see where we’re headed next on this journey!

Shuri #4 ($3.99) – This book just continues to be fun, and the art is gorgeous. I’m happy this exists.

Total: $16.96

Kate’s Picks:

Oliver #1 ($3.99) – This is the second comics take on Oliver Twist in the past year, the first being Dark Horse’s “Olivia Twist.” How will this one be different that that adaptation. Are there room for both? (Though it should be noted that “Olivia Twist” wrapped up a few weeks ago.)

Avant-Guards #1 ($3.99) – Proof that the jocks and the drama kids can happily co-exist. Plus it’s from the writer of “Heavy Vinyl” (Carly Usdin), a series that I really loved.

Knights of the Golden Sun #3 ($3.99) – I just got off the phone with Mark, the head of Mad Cave Studios, for an interview and he had me hooked on this series, which looks to fill in that 400 year gap between the Old and New Testaments. Going back to get the first two issues this week as well to check them out.

Total: $11.97

Brian’s Picks:

Buffy The Vampire Slayer #1 ($3.99) – I’m not the world’s biggest Buffy fan, bu I think BOOM! is the perfec home for the character right now, and I’m excited to see what the new home does for the franchise.

American Carnage #3 ($3.99) – DC’s best book right now may be “American Carnage.” Bryan Hill and Leandro Fernandez are crafting one of the most thrilling stories of recent note, and one that feels not just contemporary, but necessary.

Naomi #1 ($3.99) – ‘Wonder Comics,’ the new Brian Michael Bendis imprint, gets its second title this week. The Bendis and David F. Walker created character is the first new character to get an ongoing at DC in some time, and the beautiful Jamal Campbell artwork really elevates the book to a prestigious level, even if you’ve never heard of the character. DC needs to take more chances like this.

Go-Bots #3 ($3.99) – Tom Scioli makes, I buy. End of story.

Total: $15.96

Mark’s Picks:

Monstress #19 ($3.99)— YES! “Monstress” is back. After winning five Eisners last year (not to mention several other awards too), this is an absolute must pick-up book. Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda deserve all the praise heaped upon them. The world of “Monstress” is truly immersive in the way that all the best fantasy is. If you aren’t reading it, you gotta check it out. There’s a really nice hardcover collection coming later this year that I can’t wait to get my hands on…

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1956 #3 ($3.99)— I’ve spoken a lot in the Mignolaversity reviews about ‘1956’ already. I probably need to say more about Dave Johnson’s covers though because, damn, this one is fantastic!

Total: $7.98.
