Comics Should Be Cheap! (1/30/2019)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kevin’s Picks:

“Action Comics” #1007 ($3.99) – It’s only been a little over a year since it was announced that Brian Michael Bendis was jumping ship to DC, and already he’s heading into his first big event for the company which will involve Leviathan, Spyral, ARGUS, the DEO, and whatever other spy organizations exist in the DCU. Between this, Snyder, Tynion, Jimenez, and Cheung entering “arc 2” of “Justice League,” and “Batman” and others hitting #75, DC is gearing up for a big summer 2019 with events, new titles sure to be announced, and twists coming we haven’t seen yet. I can’t wait.

“Justice League Annual” #1 ($4.99) – This book is amazeballs.

“Unstoppable Wasp” ($3.99) – The wait is finally over! After a short delay this book is back and I for one could not be pleased. This book (and “Runaways”) are my two favorite things Marvel continues to regularly put out and I can’t wait to see how Nadia handles all the pressure.

“Exiles” #12 ($3.99) – RIP one of the most gorgeous and creative books on the stand.

Total: $16.96. But it could have been so much more between “The Flash Annual” #2, “”Age of X-Man Alpha” #1, “Marvel Knights 20th” #6, “West Coast Avengers’ #7, “Doctor Strange” #10 (#400), and “Mysteries of Love in Space” #1. This is a great week to close the first month of the year.

Vince’s Picks:

Mysteries of Love in Space ($9.99) – I know. I get it. $10 is a lot to ask for a comic, but this is really good! There’s a really sweet Bizarro story from Saladin Ahmed and Max Dunbar. There’s a story where Space Cabbie tries to make sweet love to his taxi. I really don’t think there’s a clunker to be found here, so if you’re a fan of DC’s characters and want to see them in stories the likes of which we don’t often get to see, check this one out.

Action Comics #1007 ($3.99) – ‘Leviathan Rising’ begins here, which is apparently the next big Brian Michael Bendis event at DC. Steve Epting does the art on this one, and it is gorgeous to look at. The issue opens with Jimmy Olsen accidentally walking into a Kobra club meeting. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry – it’s great.

Powers in Action #1 ($3.99) – Always a good decision to check out a new, all-ages Art Baltazar comic

Total: $17.97

Mark’s Pick:

“Green River Killer” (Second edition, $24.99)— Technically I’m not picking this one up (I already own it the first edition), but I wanted to shine some light on it here. This comic is billed as a true-crime graphic novel, “the story of one of America’s most notorious serial killers and the true detective who cracked the case.” And, yes, it is that, but there’s more to it. The book is written by Jeff Jensen, son of detective Tom Jensen, so right away this feels like something more intimate. The book is less about catching a serial killer and more about the toll it takes on Tom, what it costs him as a human being, from a truly unique perspective. This is paired with the work of Jonathan Case, an artist responsible for several of my favorite comics. Case has a way of bringing realism to the page without being held back by it. The expressive qualities of his art take precedence, and that’s so necessary here where the weight of years on a person is so crucial to the story.

Total: $24.99.Just the one book, but it’s worth it. “Green River Killer” is a book I tend to lend out a lot. It’s gotten a lot of mileage over the years.
