Comics Should Be Cheap! (10-13-10)

It’s been a big week since our last Comics Should Be Cheap!, as both DC and Marvel announced pricing restructuring that would be beneficial to both readers and their pocketbooks. That means, our faithful readers, that your $20 will start going much further very soon. Until then, we’re back again with our writing staff picking what books they’d buy if they only had $20 to spend.

Find out what they are after the jump.

David’s Picks

Strange Tales 2 #1 ($4.99) – This book combines a who’s who of indie creators putting together stories about Marvel characters, as we’re finally getting the follow up to the critically acclaimed first series. Featuring Jeff Lemire, Jhonen Vasquez, Rafael Grampa, Kate Beaton and a whole lot more, this book is one that shouldn’t be missed.

Superior #1 ($2.99) – Mark Millar + Leinil Francis Yu = a must buy. Sure, Millar has been a little more simple in this stories lately, going for shock value and pure entertainment more than trying to actually say something. But for this type of book, all I want is big action from Millar and Yu. This new Icon series should be entertaining as all hell.

Knight & Squire #1 ($2.99) – Bringing Paul Cornell over to these characters made recently famous by Grant Morrison was a masterstroke. I can’t think of anyone that fits these characters more, and I can’t wait to read this mini-series about the British Batman and Robin. Should be a blast.

The Unwritten #18 ($2.99) – The previous issue of this series was a creative high point from Mike Carey and Peter Gross, with an issue that was remarkably innovative and also acted as the finale to the first act. I can’t wait to see where this series goes next, and I know as long as we’re in Carey and Gross’ hands, this book will be one of the best in the business.

Sweets #3 ($2.99) – Kody Chamberlain’s New Orleans based mini-series has been an incredible crime story, and one that has spotlighted one of the best up-and-coming creators out there today. If you’ve been missing out on this Image series, I couldn’t recommend it enough.

Justice League: Generation Lost #11 ($2.99) – Judd Winick has done a phenomenal job working with the JLI and never making the readers miss Keith Giffen and JM Dematteis’ scripting, as his handling of this cast of characters has been nothing short of exceptional. This book is funny, intriguing and remarkably well told.

Matt’s Picks

Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne #5 ($3.99) – This book is getting delayed and delayed and running out of time to come out within DC’s schedule, but that doesn’t mean I’m still not excited for it. I mean, it’s a Grant Morrison penned Batman book. I don’t need much more than that.

Thanos Imperative #5 ($3.99) – The first of two penultimate event issues, DnA’s epic cosmic saga is coming to an end. Considering how good the event has been, I think this book is worth going out and buying for the final page alone, becase you know it’ll be a doozy.

Knight and Squire #1 ($2.99) – Based on the characters redesigned/created by Grant Morrison, Paul Cornell once again returns to writing UK Super Heroes. After Wisdom and Captain Britain, I’d be a fool not (and you would too) to not pick this up.

Shadowland #4 ($3.99) – The second of two penultimate event issues, my logic for Thanos Imperative really applies here. Shadowland hasn’t been perfect, but the last issue was pretty damn great. Considering Daredevil’s soul is on the line, I can only assume that we might see the Beast’s plan come to fruition in this final issue, and I can’t wait to see that and how the resurrection of Bullseye plays out with it. Again – last page is sure to be a doozy.

The Unwritten #18 ($2.99) – I spent a lot of money this week (three $4 books? Oof!), so the last book was a hard one to pick. However, when I looked down the list and saw that the Unwritten was coming out this week, there was no further contest. End of debate. Get the book.
