Comics Should Be Cheap! (10/17/2018)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kevin’s Picks:

Unstoppable Wasp #1 ($3.99) – My favorite book of 2017 is back with a new volume and I couldn’t be more excited! Jeremy Whitley and Elsa Chartier’s first run at Nadia van Dyne was heartwarming, unashamedly optimistic, inspiring, and a beautiful addition to the Marvel Universe. With Gurihiru coming on board for art duties, the art is taking a more anime-esque turn, but still looks gorgeous and fits the more positive tendencies of this series. I hope they still have the back ups with all the female scientists telling the world why they’re awesome. Can’t wait for the tears.

Justice League Dark #4 ($3.99) – ‘The Witching Hour’ crossover is real good. Plain and simple. It’s both a good transition from the different “Wonder Woman” runs and also a natural progression to everything James Tynion IV and Alvaro Martinez Bueno set up in the first 3 issues of this book. More bueno Bueno art in this installment makes it a must.

Gideon Falls #7 ($3.99) – Pulling a 180 from my first pick, I’m also super jazzed that Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino’s creepy ass, horror comic is starting it’s second arc this week. Sorrentino’s artwork is breathtakingly creative and elaborative and showcasing so much that one can do with the comic book medium. This is two creators at the top of their game.

Runaways #14 ($3.99) – This is just a permanent addition to my pull list at this point plain and simple. If you’re not reading “Runaways,” you should be, especially since the second trade drops today.

Justice League #10 ($3.99) – Look, Scott Snyder is having the time of his life writing this book and I’m happy he’s happy. Francis Manapul comes on for this lead in to the upcoming ‘Drowned Earth’ crossover, and is bringing his muted pastel coloring to an ocean-centric event. Listening to our interview with Snyder got me stoked for what’s coming. I may not always know what’s going on in this book, but it’s just pure, unadulterated fun.

Total: $19.95

Kate’s Picks:

ExorSisters #1 ($3.99) – You know my Supernatural-loving heart is all over this one, as it seems like the closest I’ll get to a Supernatural comic for now. (And believe me, I’m already working on a Winchester-focused We Want Comics installment for the near future.) Maybe I can hope for a Sam and/or Dean cameo in this series?

Shuri #1 ($3.99) – While everything about Black Panther was wonderful, Shuri was the breakout star for her intelligence, her wit, and her ability not to suffer fools gladly. All that makes me thrilled that she gets to be the star of her own series, and a superhero that will inspire many little girls of color for generations to come.

Captain Ginger #1 ($3.99) – CATS! IN! SPACE! Where they can’t knock over things!

Archie 1941 ($3.99) – I really enjoyed this series debut for going to darker, more adult places without the camp in Riverdale. Will the follow up continue to deliver as the drumbeats of war grow louder?

Total: $15.96. Told you I’d make up for overspending last week.

Mark’s pick

“Frankenstein” HC ($22.99)— There are a lot of great books coming out this week, but sadly they’re going to be neglected in favor of a new volume of Junji Ito stories… or at least, new to me. I didn’t even know Ito had adapted May Shelley’s Frankenstein, and considering his prowess with the horror genre, I’m eager to see what he brings to it. There’s also a bunch of short stories; “six tales of Oshikiri—a high school student who lives in a decaying mansion connected to a haunted parallel world” (that sounds good to me) and “the adventures of Non-non Ito, an adorable Maltese!”

…OK, I’m not sure what to make of that last one, but it sounds like fun. If it’s anything like “Cat Diary: Yon & Mu,” it’ll be weird in the best possible sense of the word.

Total: $22.99.

Nick’s Picks:

Hey Kiddo GN ($14.99) – A middle-grade graphic novel about a kid with a broken family, trying to make sense of the addiction and emotional devastation around him through drawing. I always love to see the ways tough topics are brought to younger readers, and it looks like this National Book Award finalist gets it right.

Archie 1941 #2 ($3.99) – The first issue brought a somber tone to the Archie world, heavy on the feelings of uncertainty as the US headed into World War II. With a first issue heavy on atmosphere, this second issue should give us a greater idea of where this world will take our characters.

Total: $18.98.

Vince’s Picks:

Justice League #10 ($3.99) – Okay, so it’s not exactly the most under-the-radar pick to tell you to buy Scott Snyder’s “Justice League”, but it’s the start of the ‘Drowned Earth’ event and features some absolutely gorgeous art from Francis Manapul throughout. If you haven’t been reading JL yet, it’s not too late to hop on. So far it seems like this will be another big, fun event comic from Snyder & Co.

Junji Ito’s Frankenstein HC Collection ($22.99) – I’m breaking the sacred ‘Comics Should Be Cheap’ rules because I had to get this on the list one way or another. Junji Ito is the master of spooky manga, and it’s Spooky October. I can’t think of a better celebration of the season than to curl up with a collection of stories I haven’t read from him yet.

Total: $26.98
