Comics Should Be Cheap! (10/24/2018)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kevin’s Picks:

“The Sentry #5 ($3.99) – I wrote this title off after seeing bad reviews from the first issue, but I have finally caught up on this series, and Jeff Lemire is still Lemire-ing. This is a story about family and identity, as are all Lemire jaunts, and Kim Jacinto and Joshua Cassara have been doing really solid work. But really it’s the colors by Rain Beredo that have sold this book. This book is dark-ish, fitting one of Marvel’s most misunderstood and tragic characters, but has enough heart that I’ve loved the four prior issues and will be sad to see it end.

“Wonder Woman” #57 ($3.99) – ‘The Witching Hour’ crossover has been really solid and it continues here with the penultimate issue.

“Action Comics” #1004 ($3.99) – I need to know how Bendis plans to have Superman cuckold Clark. That is all.

“Spider-Geddon” #2 ($3.99) – Tying up all the loose ends from the Slott era is the name of the game for this event, but it’s stupid fun.

“Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider” #1 – So this is definitely a “Spider-Geddon” tie-in, so if that turns you off fine, but I’m getting it. Marvel has had a lot of success recently with raiding the sci-fi/fantasy/YA world between Rainbow Rowell, Saladin Ahmed, and Nnedi Okorafor. Bringing in Seanan McGuire will continue that trend and I’m eager to see how it goes.

Total: #19.95

Kate’s Picks:

Olivia Twist #2 ($4.99) – I love the gender-bent take on the series, and while a similar concept (dystopian take on Oliver Twist is coming out next year from Image), this one has it beat by a few months, and the female-centric cast.

Black Panther v. Deadpool #1 ($3.99) – On paper this seems like a very “opposites attract” pairing, which should make it all the more fun. I’d love to see T’Challa loosen up a bit and embrace the wacky, breaking the fourth-wall humor that is Deadpool.

Mars Attacks #1 ($3.99) – Ack ack, ack ack ack. Ack ack ack, ack ack ack. Ack ack! Roughly translated: I know the Mars Attacks! franchise mainly by name, but I did enjoy Kyle Starks’s run on “Rock Candy Mountain” so I’m willing to give this a shot.

Books of Magic #1 ($3.99) – The solicit makes it sound like Harry Potter or The Magicians – – which isn’t a bad thing, but it does set the bar a bit high, as this series is going to have to prove how it is different from these two very established properties.

Total: $16.96
