Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Vince’s Picks:

Border Town #2 ($3.99) – What a tremendous debut this series had last month. A vital, modern story with detailed art to pour over made for a first issue that was a fast-paced breezy read the first time around and invited deep returns with every re-read. Equal parts youthful and funny and terrifying. I couldn’t recommend this one more.

Wonder Woman & Justice League Dark: Witching Hour #1 ($4.99) – I usually give crossover stories major side-eye, but the ingredients here are all very strong. You have James Tynion IV, who’s been knocking “Justice League Dark” out of the park, getting a shot at writing more Wonder Woman, who has mixed in with the JLD quite well with its first few issues. The issue also featured Jesus Merino doing some of his best work. It’s really solid stuff.

Black Crown Quarterly #4 ($3.99) – Shelly Bond and her Black Crown imprint is pretty much batting 1.000 at this point. The individual series all have their merits (though the ones written by Tini Howard have easily been the strongest), but the quarterly anthology issues are a hidden gem that is definitely worth it for anyone who wants to see what Black Crown is about. They give you previews of current or upcoming series, but also little strips and interviews and stories that are as irreverent and memorable as anything full-length the publisher is putting out. I guess what I mean to say is you’re getting a lot of good shit for your $3.99

Euthanauts #3 ($3.99) – And here’s one of those Black Crown books from Tini Howard. A touching, groovy, sometimes spooky look at the human condition through a spectre of dying.

Total: $15.96

Mark’s picks

“Redlands” #7 ($3.99)— Jordie Bellaire and Vanesa R. Del Rey’s “Redlands” is back, and if this new arc is anything like the first, it shouldn’t be missed.

“Giant Days” #43 ($3.99)— The series that’s always on my list is once again on my list. Shocking, I know. Usually I like to read this series in big chunks, so I’m perpetually behind, but I think I may need to catch up so I can enjoy this year’s Christmas Special when it comes out. I need to catch up on all the drama with Ed.

“Paper Girls” #25 ($3.99)— Another series I’m behind on. Thankfully, this issue wraps up the fifth arc, so I’ll be catching up this weekend.

“The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion” #1 ($3.99)— The ‘Dallas’ arc wrapped up back in 2009, so to say we’ve been waiting a while for ‘Hotel Oblivion’ is a bit of an understatement. That said, it’s good to have Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá back on “The Umbrella Academy,” especially since there’s a Netflix series coming next year.

Total: $15.96.
