Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!
Vince’s Picks:
“East of West” #43 ($3.99) – The final arc of “East of West” begins here. I can’t express my admiration for this series profusely enough. It’s been a top 5 book for me since the very first issue was published and I don’t want to see it come to an end. Hickman is a genius, but it’s been so gratifying to see Nick Dragotta’s incredible talent grow over the last 5 years.
“The Batman’s Grave” #1 ($3.99) – Warren Ellis is doing some really interesting stuff with Batman. In fact, it’s a sort of contentious take on the work that he and Alfred do, that I wouldn’t be surprised if some people were annoyed by it. I think it’s clever, and on top of that, Bryan Hitch is doing career work with Kevin Nowlan inking. Definitely one to check out, even if you have Batman fatigue.
“Usagi Yojimbo” #5 ($3.99) – The master continuing his opus. Every issue is a must buy.
“Powers of X” #6 ($5.99) – The opening salvo to the new direction of X-books comes to an end here, setting up the “Dawn of X” status quo. It’s been a wild ride thus far. This is as essential as superhero comics get.
Total: $17.96
Brian’s Picks:
“Superman” #16 ($3.99) – This is the reunion we’ve all been waiting for, and it is finally here. Jon + Damian 4eva <3.
“Powers of X” #6 ($5.99) – Is it absurd that this costs $6? Yes. Will it be worth it? Yes. Am I still going to complain? Yes. But secretly, am I fine with it? Yes.
“Star Wars Complete Marvel Comics Covers Mini Hardcover, Volume 1” ($11.99) – So this is a silly little thing: it’s about size of a pack of cigarettes, but instead of being full of cancer sticks, it is full of tiny versions of the Marvel Star Wars covers, both from the 80s and the more recent reboot. It’s a great, albeit early, stocking stuffer for the Star Wars lover in your life.
Total: $21.97 – I’m a bad little boy.
Kevin’s Picks:
“Powers of X” #6 ($5.99) – Alright, time to finally figure out what the hell’s going on with that X^3 stuff.
“East of West” #43 ($3.99) – Speaking of endings (and I guess Hickman’s), I’m so behind on this series, but I am so eager to see how this Apocalypse also wraps up. Bring on the last arc, friends!
“Doctor Doom” #1 ($3.99) – This creative team seems really enticing, so I’ll give this first issue a go!
“Superman” #16 ($3.99) – “Super Sons” gotta catch up before Jon goes all space future.
Total: $17.96
Kate’s Picks:
“Shoplifters Will Be Liquidated” #1 ($3.99) – Judge Dredd meets Amazon (the solicit’s words, not mine). Doubt you’ll ever look at that two-day Prime shipping ever again.
“Gwenpool Strikes Back” #3 ($3.99) – I can never have enough Gwenpool in my life.
Total: $7.98. Coming off of NYCC, it’s a good light week. My budget thanks me.
