Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Jason’s Picks:

”New Mutants” #1 ($4.99)‒ Each new X-Men extended family comic that has come out recently has been amazing! I expect nothing less from “New Mutants.”

”Batman: Universe” #5 ($4.99)‒ Honestly, I could write so much about how great this series is, and how it’s my favorite Batman comic in years. But, I’ll keep it short here. It’s awesome, and you should be reading it! Plus it feels like a Batman Brave and The Bold comic, which I absolutely love about it!

”Green Lantern: Blackstars” #1 ($3.99)‒ Another comic that doesn’t need a big explanation on why to buy. It contains two words that will instantly sell me on a comic—Grant Morrison. It helps that his and Liam Sharp’s “Green Lantern” has been amazing so far!

”Wonder Twins” #9 ($3.99)‒ “Wonder Twins” is another series I have absolutely adored through 2019. I’ve shoved each issue into my friends face to read it, and will buy all the trades so I can pass it around. You could say it’s a wonderful series!

Total:$17.96. With two of my favorite series continuing while another starts a new ‘season’, this week was a hard one!

Brian’s Picks:

Legion of Super-Heroes #1 ($3.99) – This book has been a long time coming. There hasn’t been an ongoing LoSH book since 2013, and not one with the combined star power of Brian Bendis and Ryan Sook in a very, very long time. With Jon Kent in tow, this looks to be a very fun ride.

New Mutants #1 and X-Force #1 ($4.99 each) – ‘Dawn of X’ hasn’t had quite the punch that “House of X” and “Powers of X” had, but it has still been, a satisfying experience. This week, we get two new titles, and I’m excited about both.

Deathstroke #49 ($3.99) – We need to enjoy this series while we can. It is imperative to recognize just how dope this series is.

Addams Family: The Bodies Issue #1 ($4.99) – My kids are on a major Addams Family kick lately, between the new film and the Pluto TV channel that shows all the 60s episodes on a loop. So this one is for the kids.

Plus Charles Addams was from New Jersey, and I’ve got to rep the Garden State.

Total: $22.95 – Yes, this is over, but I’m buying one of these for my kids, so that’s a different budget. Or so I’m telling you to cover my ass.

Matt Lune’s Picks:

Undiscovered Country #1 ($3.99) – The talent on display on this book is already impressive before a page has even been turned, but the whole concept – the United States walled off from the rest of the world, explorers braving this newly isolated land – sounds like that kind of analogous sci-fi that I dig.

Locke & Key: Dog Days #1 ($5.99) – It’s been a number of years since our last trip to the town of Lovecraft, but it’s always a treat when Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez join forces again.

New Mutants #1 ($4.99) – The original cast is back! This is one of my favorite series – especially the Claremont/Sienkiewicz era – so I’m excited to see how they fit into the Bold New Direction that’s gripped the entire X-line.

Total: $14.97
