Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kate’s Picks:

Wonder Woman Evolution #1 ($3.99) – Diana has long loved humanity unconditionally, but what happens when that love is put to the ultimate test? Expect plenty of action, with Mike Hamilton, known for “Daredevil” and “Deadpool,” on artwork – – but also plenty of what Wonder Woman stands for: heart.

Shang-Chi #6 (#3.99) – Now that Shang-Chi has dropped on Disney+, those who want to find out more about the character have the opportunity. This is the end of the current story arc, so grab this and the back issues if you can. And it’s going out with a bang as Shang-Chi is facing down Thor!

Doctor Who: Empire of the Wolf #1 ($3.99) – As the resident Doctor Who recapper and expert, it would be a crime not to include this on my pull list. The Eighth Doctor deserved better than the 1996 TV movie he got, so I’m always happy to see more opportunities for more of his stories. The pairing of Paul McGann’s Doctor with Matt Smith’s Eleven and Rose Tyler should be an interesting dynamic, and with Rose Tyler back from a parallel universe, anything is possible.

Great Gatsby #2 ($4.99) – Any opportunity to bring classic literature to life in new ways is one I welcome. (Though the Robert Redford-Mia Farrow film is still tops in my heart.)

Total: $16.96

Mark’s Picks:

Blacksad: They All Fall Down – Part 2 ($5.99) – This is only available digitally for now, but I’m a little too impatient to wait for Dark Horse’s print edition next year. As far as I’m concerned Juanjo Guarnido’s art alone is always a must-buy.

We Only Kill Each Other #1 ($2.99) – Stephanie Phillips is writing with Peter Krause on art. The story’s set in 1938, focusing of the Nazi influence on America at the time and the New York gangsters. This isn’t my usual cup of tea, but ComiXology has been doing good comics since it launched, and in 2021 they’ve been better than ever, to the point that if there is a new series coming out from them, I’m going to at least give it a look.

Hailstone – Volume 1: The Lost Children ($6.99) – I checked out a preview of the first issue last month and immediately pre-ordered this collection. “Hailstone” has an intriguing premise and the art by Rafael de Latorre is gorgeous. Another great comic from ComiXology.

Primordial #3 ($3.99) – I get a kick out of this book just for Andrea Sorrentino’s layouts alone. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of great things in here, but that’s the highlight for me.

Total: $19.96. Also looking at “Night Cry,” “Norse Mythology” II #6, and the “Witchfinder – Volume 2” omnibus edition.

Johnny’s Picks:

Decorum #8 ($4.99) – The final issue of a series that ultimately left me wanting more – a qualm laid not at the feet of Mike Huddleston, whose art was jaw-dropping, inventive, and brilliant throughout. If Hickman was using a thin story to let Huddleston have some crazy fun, he is forgiven.

Primordial #3 ($3.99) – Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino resume their dynamite partnership on this trippy and intriguing soon-to-be-an-FX-limited-series type Image book. I say that not as a knock, but you can certainly smell the “optioned for television” vibe wafting off the pages.

Batman Secret Files: The Gardener #1 ($4.99) – Hell yeah! James Tynion IV paired with Christian Ward to bring a new villain into the Dark Knight’s Rogues Gallery? Count me in. Ward has such a wonderful visual style, I have no doubt he’ll make the exploration into this new DC villain a memorable one. Eco-terrorists are often some of my favorite villain archetypes – curious to see how Tynion pits her against Bats.

Radio Apocalypse #1 ($3.99) – We loved “Blue in Green”and “Grafity’s Wall” didn’t we, folks? Welp, the creative team behind those two books, writer Ram V and artist Anand RK (with letterer Aditya Bidikar) are back with a book about the end of the world. Or, the aftermath thereof, rather. Savvy readers will recognize that post-apocalyptic books are my catnip, and Ram V has been a writer I’ve enjoyed more and more over the past couple of years, so I’m locked in for this book about a tiny radio station at the end of everything.

Total: $17.96

Christopher’s Picks:

Doctor Who: Empire of the Wolf #1 ($3.99) – With Doctor Who: Flux proving to be a giant, alienating (no pun intended) mess, I’m looking to the comics more than ever for decent adventures in time and space, and Jody Houser and Roberta Ingranata appear to have served up a suitably nostalgic story for the Eighth Doctor’s 25th anniversary, teaming him up with the Eleventh, and featuring… two Rose Tylers?!

Superman: Son of Kal-El #5 ($3.99) – If you know anything about this issue, you’ll know why this is a must read, even if you haven’t read the previous chapters yet: Jon Kent, the son of Lois and Clark, is bi, and we are all very proud of him.

Shang-Chi #6 ($3.99) – Shang-Chi vs. Thor! Who would win? Let’s find out!

Total: $11.97
