Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Vince’s Picks:

“East of West” #44 ($3.99) – If you ask me (and Multiversity Comics did), Jonathan Hickman and Nick Dragotta’s “East of West” is the best comic of the last decade. It’s a sprawling epic that does everything well, from the structural way it unfurls its narrative to the way Dragotta utilizes the comic art tricks of the trade to engage and touch the reader. This comic does absolutely everything I want a long-running comic book to do. There’s only a few issues left, so don’t miss out. It’s an all-time great!

“Conan the Barbarian 2099” #1 ($4.99) – I’m not sure how well Conan’s integration into Marvel has worked for me, thus far, but I’m totally willing to go along with the idea of the savage Cimmerian getting roped into the 2099 event. With Gerry Duggan penning the story, it’s sure to be a goofy fusion love-letter to both Conan and Marvel’s particular brand of futuristic sci-fi comics.

Total: $8.98

Kevin’s Picks:

“X-Force” #2 ($3.99) – So this book started with a bang…and I need to know what happens.

“New Mutants” #2 ($3.99) – The easy answer to the column this week would be to tell you that I’m getting all the Dawn of X books and…

“Fallen Angels” #2 ($3.99) – …in fact I am. This whole new Dawn of X experiment has just been some of the most fun I’ve had with comics in a really long time and you can bet, whether you find those titles listed under my name here or not, that I’m reading it all and boy we’ll have thoughts on Make Mine Multiversity.

“Second Coming” #5 ($3.99) – And now for something entirely different. Ever wondered what God and Satan’s coffee dates are like? I have. Gee I’d like to be a fly on the wall at that Starbucks.

“John Constantine: Hellblazer” #1 ($3.99) – And cause I guess I’m all in for books this week that have Jesus Christ and f-bombs, I’ll be picking me up some Hellblazer.

Total: $19.95. But! If you still have some money left over that you aren’t planning on spending on Black Friday, “Ironheart” is set to end with issue #12, and Eve Ewing has already teased she isn’t done with Riri. Will we get a tease for a new series? Also, “Valkyrie” ends it’s first arc, and it’s been just a near perfect book so do dive in!

Kate’s Picks:

“Hope” #6 ($3.99) – This miniseries about a superhero who also is a mother, and how the two sides come in conflict with each other, is a story that manages to fit in beautifully with our current culture. As writer Dirk Manning said in our NYCC interview, this is a story ” about a villain that can’t be punched.” And perhaps that’s the bigger enemy than the likes of Thanos or the Joker.

“Rugrats: Last Token” ($14.99) – It’s every parent’s worst nightmare: when the tokens run out at Chuck E. Cheese. Babies to the rescue! I’ve appreciated how the “Rugrats” comics mixed modern stories without losing the TV series’s nostalgic charm, and I hope with a new creative team on this graphic novel, that holds true here as well.

Total: $18.98

Brian’s Picks:

“Shazam” #8 ($3.99) – Despite this book being delayed and decompressed, comics are better when there is a Marvel Family book out there. Support this title so that it doesn’t take another 20 years to get a new ongoing after this one wraps.

Continued below

“Second Coming” #5 ($3.99) – This book has been everything I hoped it would be, and seems like a real mistake on DC’s part to let it walk.

“Tales From the Dark Multiverse: Infinite Crisis” #1 ($5.99) – These ‘Tales from the Dark Multiverse’ books have been really hit or miss (and expensive to boot), but “Infinite Crisis” was the catalyst for so much of what I love about DC, and so I’ll gladly step back into that world for a few pages this week.

‘Dawn of X’ Title of Your Choice ($3.99) – Whichever book is more your speed, pick that one up. Or, if you budget allows it, grab ’em all.

Total: $17.96

Jason’s Picks:

”New Mutants” #2 ($3.99)‒ I thought the first issue was the best debut out of the other “Dawn of X” titles I read, so why wouldn’t I read the second? Even if you’ve never read “New Mutants” give the first one a read, you’ll love it!

”The Plot” #3 ($3.99)‒ Absolutely love everything Vault Comics has been publishing! Usually horror is hard to do in comics, but “The Plot” makes it look easy.

”Punisher 2099” #1 ($4.99)‒ I remember the edge in the original “Punisher 2099” cutting me because how sharp it was. Seriously, ask The Punisher where he lives.

”Second Coming” #5 ($3.99)‒ Mark Russell has recently became a top writer for me, and I’ve fallen in love with “Second Coming.”

”Dollar Comics: Infinite Crisis” #1 ($1.00)‒ What? I wanted to get as close to $20 as possible!

Total:$17.96.

Mark’s Picks:

“Witchfinder Omnibus Edition – Volume 1” ($34.99)— A hardcover omnibus collecting the first half of Sir Edward’s time in the service of Queen Victoria (the first three “Witchfinder” trades). This is a good mix of stories, featuring the writing talents of Mike Mignola, John Arcudi, Kim Newman, and Muara McHugh, and the artistic talents of Ben Stenbeck, John Severin, and Tyler Crook. Each story is wildly different from each other too, going from the city of London to the village of Hallam and even as far as the American wild west. This is a must-get for any Mignola fan.

“Witchfinder: The Reign of Darkness” #1 ($3.99)— I’ve been waiting for this story for over a decade. Sir Edward Grey’s Jack the Ripper investigation is something Mike Mignola teases readers about every few years, just to remind us that it’s still coming. Needless to say, expectations are high.

Total: $38.99. It’s a Sir Edward week, clearly.

Erik’s Picks:

“Sir Edward Grey, Witchfinder: The Reign of Darkness” #1 ($3.99) – I think the last Hellboy Universe story I read was “Koshchei the Deathless,” so when I saw that this was being released, I got really excited to revisit the Victorian mysteries of Sir Edward Grey. Plus Roberson is bringing back Sarah Jewell from “Rise of the Black Flame” which was another favorite series of mine.

“East of West” #44 ($3.99) – The penultimate issue. I love this world that Hickman and Dragotta built and I’m sad to see it go.

“Killadelphia” #1 ($3.99) – I wrote up the news story for this when it was first announced and it really piqued my interest. I’m a sucker for a good vampire story.

Total: $11.97
