Comics Should Be Cheap! (11/28/2018)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kevin’s Picks:

Ironheart #1 ($3.99) – I have been so excited for this book since it was announced. It also happens that I happen to be at the university that Eve Ewing teaches at, and so it has been crazy to see a comic, one that’s not even out yet, take off in such a way. I have classmates and friends, people who have never read comics before in their lives, excited for this book because Ewing is attached to it and their fans of her other work. At the end of the day, that’s what’s exciting, this book has already brought a number of people to begin to check out a medium they’ve never touched before. Whether or not this book has a great direct marker debut doesn’t matter, it’s going to be successful, and I can’t see what Ewing brings to the batch of non-comics, native writers Marvel continues to assemble.

Action Comics #1005 ($3.99) – Bendis and Sook’s last issue will probably make many a year end list and this series has been the better of the Bendis “Supes” books, which is saying something because both are phenomenal. Now tell me who The Red Cloud is dangit.

Wonder Woman #59 ($3.99) – G. Willow Wilson and Cary Nord’s debut two weeks ago assured everyone that Diana is in good hands. It’s clear they’re beginning to build a bigger cast of supporting characters, and bringing the Greek mythology back to the forefront of this world like hasn’t been done since Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang’s run. This is going to be a fun ride.

Daredevil #612 ($3.99) – Charles Soule ends his three year run on the Man Without Fear this week with Phil Noto’s gorgeous art. Daredevil is gonna die (and come back soon), and I can’t wait to see how Soule wraps this saga up.

Total: $15.96

Matt Lune’s Picks:

These Savage Shores #2 ($3.99) – The first issue of this series was arguably the best debut issue of the year, so you better believe I’m eager to read the follow-up.

The Warning #1 ($3.99) – This sounds like a mix between “Trees” and “Letter 44,” and seeing as I loved both of those series I’m looking forward to this book.

Marvel Action Spider-Man #1 ($3.99) – Ever since Marvel announced that it was outsourcing its all-ages comics to IDW, I’ve been fascinated to see the result. Starting with Spider-Man is a safe choice, but change is as good as a rest they say.

Ironheart #1 ($4.99) – One of the best new characters to come from the House of Ideas finally gets her own series (or, at least, one without another character’s name on the cover) and I am all in for it.

Total: $16.96

Vince’s Picks:

DC Nuclear Winter Special #1 ($9.99) – DC Comics has been putting a few of these oversized anthology-style one shots out a year for the last few years, and while they’ve been of varying quality, I actually think this one is very good. It features a laugh-filled Rip Hunter framing device written by Mark Russell and stories with oddball characters like Superman One Million and Batman 666. Strong writers, strong art teams, and very few clunkers in this one.

Oh S#!t It’s Kim & Kim #4 ($3.99) – I’ve been a big “Kim & Kim” booster from day one and it’s never let me down. One of the most thrilling and magnetic creator-owned comics currently on the market.

Ironheart #1 ($4.99) – I can’t tell you how delighted I am that Marvel has stuck with Riri Williams even after Brian Michael Bendis’s departure from the publisher. I was an initial skeptic of the character, not for any of the awful, extremely online reasons you often see, but because it felt like something Marvel wouldn’t stick with for the long run. Giving her a solo ongoing series (with an outside-the-box choice of writer) bodes well for Marvel’s commitment to keeping her around.

Total: $18.97

Kate’s Picks:

Ironheart #1 ($4.99) – Riri Williams gets her own series, and while I never read any of her “Iron Man” run (save for the “Generations” issue), this looks to be a great place for me to start.

Fence #12 ($3.99) – It’s the final issue before this series moves to OGN format, and I hope it provides a fine farewell (for now).

DC Nuclear Winter Holiday Special ($8.99) – Everybody sing with me! ” It’s Christmas at ground zero/There’s music in the air/The sleigh bells are ringing and the carolers are singing/While the air raid sirens blare….” Now that Thanksgiving has passed here in the States, it’s more than appropriate to read holiday comics, and sometimes you need a nice antidote to Hallmark Christmas movie world you see in the rest of the media during this time.

Total: $17.97

Nick’s Pick:

Aquaman: The Search For Mera, Deluxe Edition HC ($34.99) – A hearty slice of Aparo art from when he was at the top of his game, in a story that brought Aquaman and his family into the Bronze Age. I’ve wanted to read this story for years. Regardless of the quality of the movie, I’m glad it led to classic reprints like these!

Total: $34.99.
