Comics Should Be Cheap! (11/25/2015)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

Chew #52 ($3.50) – We’re getting ever closer to the end of this fantastic series and these final few issues still have plenty of surprises in store, I’m sure. According to the solicit text, we’ll finally find out the secret of the fire writing in the sky, so this could be a huge revelation for “Chew”. After the change of pace for last issue, there’s no telling what’s in store.

Postal #8 ($3.99) – File this under “comics that no one seems to be reading, but everyone should” because “Postal” is quietly becoming one of my favorite comics of the year. If you haven’t checked out this one yet, I suggest you do before it’s too far along to catch up with.

Ringside #1 ($3.99) – Admittedly, I’m not really a fan of professional wrestling, but I’ll give most Joe Keatinge books a try. If nothing else, it’ll be interesting to see that comic fan/wrestling fan Venn Diagram overlap even more as the two merge with this book.

Total: $11.48

Keith’s Picks:

Dark Knight III: The Master Race #1 ($5.99) – This is the comic book event I’ve been looking forward to the most all year. With “The Dark Knight Returns” being my favorite book of all time, how could it not be? I have faith that Miller, Azzarello, Kubert, and Janson will do a bang-up job worthy of the Caped Crusader.

Saga #31 ($2.99) – It’s always cause for celebration when one of the best and most consistently great series comes back from a hiatus.

Black Magick #2 ($3.99) – The first issue was one of the best of the year. “Black Magick” instantly introduced itself as a witchy labor of love birthed by writer Greg Rucka and artist Nicola Scott.

Omega Men #6 ($2.99) – Speaking of labor of love, “Omega Men” is the gorgeous and criminally under-purchased title written by Tom King and illustrated by Barnaby Bagenda. King is proving himself to be one of the best writers around with this book and “Grayson” (which just happens to be released this week as well). Bagenda is an artistic revelation whose further artistic endeavors I look forward to absorbing in the future.

We Are Robin #6 ($3.99) – This title was one of the biggest surprises of the DCYou initiative and it instantly became one of my favorite comics (Bat-related or not).

Total: $19.95 – It’s a pretty stacked week, with “Dark Knight III” lording over all.

Kevin’s Picks:

Dark Knight III: The Master Race #1 ($5.99)-“The Dark Knight Returns” was one of the first adult comics I read many moons ago. I got to revisit it once again in college, picking on many new details. That truly was Frank Miller’s master work. Aside from “Sin City”, most of his post “Dark Knight Returns” work has been nothing short of awful. However, I am cautiously optimistic that this one will prove doubters like me wrong. With Brian Azzarello assisting on the writing duties, there is a ton of potential. I am a little unsure about Andy Kubert, only because I am not sure if his style fits the tone of the story. Either way, this is a big deal.

The Fade Out #11 ($3.50)– I had the pleasure of reviewing issue #10 a few weeks back, which was satisfying. A ton of questions were answered in that issue, making me wonder what could possibly be left to tell. Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips are masters at their craft, so there is no cause for concern. With one issue left until the finale, consider me excited for this one.

Chew #52 ($3.50)– “Chew” is one of my favorite series of all time. Like a lot of series, there is a lot of balls in the air before the conclusion. Rest assured, John Layman & Rob Guillory will be bringing their A game to these final issues.

Ringside #1 ($3.99)– As a lifelong pro-wrestling fan, I wondered why something like this hadn’t happened previously. Judging by the previews, this is going to have a “Wrestler” type feel. That should lend very well to the comic book world. Kudos to Image for going way outside their normal wheelhouse with this one.

Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur #1 ($3.99)– As I noted last week, Marvel is giving service to some forgotten characters this time around. I know very little about Moon Girl or even Devil Dinosaur. But the “girl and her dog” type relationship is very intriguing to me. The creative team also has had success outside of Marvel, so this seems like a good book for them to take on. I will also be reviewing it this week, so my anticipation is high.

Total: $20.97 – Inching closer to year’s end and there are still great books coming out. A nice array of titles and the return of a legendary creator back to Batman. Great way to spend Thanksgiving, if you are not into the whole football thing.

Matt Garcia’s Picks:

Archie #4 ($3.99) – Just before the new series was announced, my boyfriend had started getting into “Archie Comics” in a big way, and one thing I’ve learned flipping through all the digests around the house, is that “Archie” is super underestimated. The first three issues of the new series captured the spirit and tone and humor well for the characters, and they’ve been nothing but a delight. Fiona Staples is stepping out and Annie Wu is taking over for an issue, and I’m excited to see all the creative people involved continue to develop and interpret these characters.

Kaptara #5 ($3.50) – Look, I was super into this series before, but after watching this video, I’m just more on-board for what these dudes are doing.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #1 ($3.99) – When it does come out, Amy Reeder and Brandon Montclare’s “Rocket Girl” is a delightful and exciting romp. I’m hoping that same energy comes into this series, which nevertheless look dope because of Natacha Bustos’s art.

Dark Knight III: The Master Race ($5.99) – I could barely type the title out before going, “Oh my God, seriously.” This book is destined to be a hot mess, but it might be worth looking at? It’s…something, all right.

Total: $17.47

Ken’s Pick:

The Flash by Geoff Johns vol. 1 ($24.99)– There are two writers very heavily tied Wally West’s tenure as The Flash, Mark Waid (which they really need to re-release that stuff) and Geoff Johns. You want to see where a great deal of influence for the TV came from? You want to see Johns great work on the franchise before he pissed away a lot of the good will w/ “Flash: Rebirth”? Then get on it.

Total: $24.99- It’s the holidays. Splurge a bit.
