Comics Should Be Cheap! (1/17/2018)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kate’s Picks:

Ice Cream Man #1 ($3.99) – This is a horror comic with a fun twist. While each story is self-contained, there is a recurring character of a ice cream man who acts as Greek chorus and story manipulator. I’m digging the Twilight Zone inspired vibe.

Fence #3 ($3.99) – My anime-obsessed friends keep telling me to watch Yuri on Ice. While I don’t have time for another TV show in my schedule, this Yuri-inspired comic on fencing has been fitting the bill quite nicely. (I also have it on good authority, via my boyfriend who fenced while in college, that the fencing techniques and competitive scene are quite accurately depicted. Kudos to C.S. Pacat for doing her homework on the fencing world!)

Assassinistas #2 ($3.99) – In this era of #MeToo and #TimesUp, we need some badass lady bounty hunters reuniting for one last job.

Total: $11.97. Rather light week for me. If I had more money to spare I would splurge on the “Giant Days Not on the Test Edition”” ($34.99); this was one of the few series I did read regularly before I got back into reading comics on a more regular basis.

Kevin’s Picks:

Damage #1 ($2.99) – I am so excited for DC’s New Age of Heroes, and while “Damage” from Tony Daniel and Robert Venditti may be at the bottom of that hype train, I’ll be getting this. DC has been firing on all cylinders with a ton of new innovative and creative projects with this being the latest. The DCU deserves some new heroes and concepts, hopefully from not all white men in the future, but nonetheless the New Age arrives Wednesday.

Super Sons #12 ($3.99) – This has been a pretty fun crossover, and while the lasting repercussions of it are winding down and seeming to be minimal, I’m ready to see how Tomasi and Gleason wrap this up and finally stop spinning the wheels a little bit and get back to some great “Superman” stories.

Batman #39 ($2.99) – I may be hit or miss on Tom King’s “Batman” run, but I am all here for Joelle Jones getting to draw Wonder Woman.

Doctor Strange #384 ($3.99) – Donny Cates was a great get for Marvel. Gabriel Hernandez Walta is one of their best artists. This series is awesome. Keep it coming.

The Mighty Thor #703 ($3.99) – Death is on its way for Jane Foster, as Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman (seemingly) bring her story to a close. Only two more issues left until death comes. This whole run has consistently been one of Marvel’s best stories, and also one of its most isolated. This story has been huge, and also completely separate, but damn is it good.

Total – $17.95

Justin’s Picks:

Doctor Strange #384 ($3.99) – Loki as the Sorcerer Supreme is the Marvel book I never knew I really wanted. Donny Cates can do no wrong right now.

The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars Part 2 TP ($10.99) – If I can’t have more The Legend of Korra episodes, this OGN series is the next best thing. All the books in the Avatar line have been great additions to the shows, but this is written by co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino so it has some extra weight to it.

The Mighty Thor #703 ($3.99) – I’m so conflicted about this arc. I can’t wait to read each new issue at the same time that I don’t want Jane Foster’s time as Thor to end. Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman have crafted an all-time great Thor run and we’re lucky to be in the middle of it.

Total: $18.97.

Mark’s picks:

“The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars” – Part 2 ($10.99)— It’s great to have “The Legend of Korra” back. Six months is a long wait between parts (understandable though, given the book is 80 pages long). I recommend revisiting Part 1 before diving into this, as you’ll get a lot more out of it, especially if you’re a little hazy on the details.

“Rumble” #2 ($3.99)— Last issue we got a mere teasing glimpse of what Rathraq has become in the wake of the events from the “Immortal Coil” arc. This issue delves so much deeper. To say that Rathraq has changed may be a bit of an understatement. In a way, the switch from artist James Harren to David Rubín pushes this element even further, making us less certain who Rathraq is anymore. Rubín moves Rathraq differently, so the character feels even more unpredictable than usual. And I really like where Arcudi is taking this arc…

Total: $14.98. It’s good to spend some time with a pair of books that have been away for a while. I’ve missed them both.

Kent’s Picks:

Giant Days Not on the Test Edition HC Vol. 2 ($34.99) – With winter semesters fully underway, what better way to avoid class that with a giant-sized slab of required reading courtesy of John Allison’s required reading and Max Sarin. This hardcover collects the third and fourth arc of Susan, Esther and Daisy’s collegiate misadventures. “Giant Days” was #5 on list of Best Ongoing Series for 2017, but a tome like this just goes to show it’s always been that damn good.

Total: $34.99 – “Strangers in Paradise XXV” #1 ($3.99), “Aquaman” #32 ($3.99), and “Assassinistas” #2 ($3.99), “Days of Hate” #1 ($3.99), and “Kill or Be Killed” #15 ($3.99) make it really hard to keep away from the singles this week. But once if you’ve already dug into collecting these handsome hardcovers, it means you’ve got to stick with it for the long haul.
