Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Jason’s Picks:

”Spider-Man 2099” #1 ($4.99)‒ I haven’t been keeping up with what Marvel’s been doing with the 2099 event, but I love the character of Spider-Man 2099. Ever since I read the original series as a young kid I fell in love with his lingo, costume, character, and world. Out of the multitude of Spider-Mans, 2099 is my jam, so I plan on checking this one out!

”New Mutants” #3($3.99)‒ So far “New Mutants” has been my favorite X-title with the recent series’ debuts. It seems issue 3 is changing up the story and focusing on a different group of mutants. Hopefully this works!

”Wonder Twins” #10 ($3.99)‒ “Wonder Twins” has been my breakout comic of the year, with me following in love with the creators other works, and the Wonder Twins themselves. Never did I think a Wonder Twins comic would be one of the best mini-series of the year!

”Doctor Mirage #5 ($3.99)‒ “Doctor Mirage (2019)” is another comic that I didn’t expect to love as much as I do. I’d never read any comics about the character, but after this final issue I’m sad to see the mini end!

Total:$16.96. Not a super big week for me, but great titles nonetheless!

Vince’s Picks:

Detective Comics #1017 ($3.99) – Imagine what if a child trafficking ring were happening out of Gotham’s most prominent orphanage? Is this a job for Batman or Bruce Wayne? Will it end in someone from the deep state doing a murder and making it look like a “prison suicide?” Pick up this standalone detective story from Tom Taylor and Fernando Blanco to find out if anything I just said is true.

Superman #18 ($3.99) – Speaking of “the truth” (hey, that’s the subtitle of this issue), this is finally the issue of Brian Bendis’s “Superman” run where he begins to reveal his identity to the world. What ramifications will it have? It remains to be seen, but I can tell you that the issue itself is a thoroughly touching version of a story that’s been done a few times with the character.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #100 ($7.99) – I must confess that I have kept up very little with the modern incarnation of TMNT, dipping in and out from time to time. I’m definitely picking up this oversized milestone issue though. Hey, maybe they’ll get me to stick around.

New Mutants #3 ($3.99) – The ‘Dawn of X’ titles have been such a delight, but perhaps none of them have been as good as “New Mutants” at tickling the old funny bone. You gotta have levity with your harrowing, status quo altering meta-events, and “New Mutants” and “Marauders” are neck and neck as far as delivering on that.

Total: $19.96

Mark’s Picks:

“Pretty Deadly Rat” #4 ($3.99) – There’s nothing on my list this week you haven’t seen before, so rather than repeat myself about how great the writing and art is, I want to point out the covers. This one’s my favorite. Emma Ríos, I tip my hat.

“Gideon Falls” #19 ($3.99) – Andrea Sorrentino’s covers for “Gideon Falls” are not only great, eye-catching designs, but they capture the essence of the series damn near perfectly. The covers for ‘The Pentoculus’ arc are probably the best so far.

“Trees: Three Fates” #4 ($3.99) – Given the iconic look of the trees in the story, I think the best covers for the series always seem to have that element of a strong vertical element on them. Jason Howard uses this here to suggest the trees element, while still focusing on the human element. It’s the best cover in the ‘Three Fates’ arc, in my opinion.

“Steeple #4” #4 ($3.99) – Warwick Johson-Cadwell’s variant cover for “Steeple” #4 is such a perfect match for John Allison’s interiors. I’m adding this to the evidence file that Johnson-Cadwell and Allison simply must work together at some point—it would be magical.

Total: $15.96. These aren’t just great covers. The comics inside are great too.

Kevin’s Picks:

“Superman” #18 ($3.99) – Can we handle the Truth?

“Valkyrie: Jane Foster” #6 ($3.99) – The first arc of this book was funny, gorgeous-looking, and continued that same spirit and thematic questions of Jason Aaron’s long “Thor” saga. Now we’re getting the medical heroes of the Marvel Universe uniting. Such a great idea. Take my money.

“Undiscovered Country” #2 ($3.99) – The first issue of Charles Soule, Scott Snyder, and Giuseppe Camuncolli’s new Image book was a lot of set up, but this new American world we’re introduced to is interesting enough. I’ll be following this one.

“Detective Comics” #1017 ($3.99) – Tom Taylor on an issue of “Tec”? Yeah I can shell out the $4 for this one off.

“Dawn of X Book” – Take your pick ($3.99) – There’s three out this week (five next week so you could do a whole installment of CSBC with them). “New Mutants,” “Fallen Angels,” and “New Mutants” all hit shelves this week. Take your pick or shell out the big bucks for the HoXPoX hardcover.

Total: $19.95

Kate’s Picks:

“Dollhouse Family” #2 ($3.99) – Of the Hill House books released, this one is my favorite, probably having to do with having a dollhouse similar to Alice as a child. Though without the creepy miniature family.

“Dying Is Easy” #1 ($4.99) – It’s a double bill of Joe Hill books this week. Featuring a cop/stand up comic/felon, this one is perfect for when The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is just a little too cheery for you.

“Star Trek Voyager: Mirrors and Smoke” #1 ($4.99) – Clearly I’m on the “making my CSBC picks based on personal nostalgia feels” kick this week. First it’s my childhood dollhouse, now it’s one of my college night staples in Star Trek: Voyager. Janeway gone rogue as Pirate Queen? Here’s a reboot I would love to see.

“Far Sector” #2 ($3.99) – I’m not 100 percent sure where this will be headed, but In N.K. Jemisin I Trust.

Total: $17.96
