Comics Should Be Cheap (12/15/21)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s Picks:

Mazebook #4 ($3.99) – The best issue yet of an already great series. For such an intimate book, Jeff Lemire infuses “Mazebook” with a grand scale. Not to mention, it’s great the way a comic called “Mazebook” literally becomes a maze book in this issue. This is easily my top pick for the week.

Primordial #4 ($3.99) – It feels a little disingenuous to keep recommending this series when I’ve only read the first issue (I want to read the whole thing in one sitting), and yet this is Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino we’re talking about. This is about as close to a sure bet as you can get.

Just Roll with It ($12.99) – I don’t often pick OGNs because they blow the budget or knock too many other books I want to mention off my list, but “Just Roll with It” sounded like a cute book, just the sort of thing I’d like to buy for my nieces. It explores anxiety and OCD through the lens of tabletop role-playing games. It’s from artist Veronica Agarwel and writer Lee Durfey-Lavoie. I’m not familiar with Durfey-Lavoie’s work, but Agarwel’s webcomic “Magical Girl Problems, Magical Girl Solutions” certainly has piqued my interest in “Just Roll with It.”

Total: $20.97. I know, I’ve committed the cardinal sin of going over budget, but since this is the last CSBC for the year, we can let this slide, right? …Right?

Brian’s Picks:

2000 Ad Prog 2262 ($7.90) – 100 pages of (mostly) new stories, a Sly Stallone cameo, the continuation of “The Out” and “Dexter,” and lots more more than make up for the $7.90 (£5.99 converted) cover price.

Wonder Girl” #6 ($3.99) – This book has been delayed so many times, it can be easy to forget how much fun worldbuilding is happening within its pages. If it could just get on schedule, it could be something special.

Batgirls #1 ($3.99) – The idea of three generations of Batgirls – Barbara Gordon, Cassandra Cain, and Stephanie Brown – sharing a title is a great way to highlight all three cowl-donners, but also allows the book to feel different than any of their ‘solo’ titles ever did. Plus, Jorge Corona’s art is truly inspired.

Total: $15.88

Johnny’s Picks:

Mazebook #4 ($3.99) – I will join the chorus, singing praise for this series. What Lemire is building towards here in the best of three books he’s releasing this week is nothing short of special.

Robin & Batman #2 ($5.99) – The second Lemire book on my list is also another fantastic mini-series – this one with long-time collaborator Dustin Nguyen. A look at the Dynamic Duo that focuses on Robin (the Dick Grayson one), growing into his own under Batman’s tutelage. Fans of books like “Ascender” and “Descender” will know that the pair of creators already have tread the boards of parent/child relationships pretty thoroughly, but not with a pair so famous.

Excalibur #26 ($3.99) – Tini Howard and Marcus To have been building towards this confrontation since the first issue of the series, a final battle between the forces of Merlyn and King Arthur and Saturnyne and her champion(s) – Captain Britain and Excalibur. In an era of X that has been heavily focused on sociopolitical issues, “Excalibur” has been a wild, and necessary, diversion.

Total: $13.97

Kate’s Pick:

Emma Dreams of Stars ($19.95) – One lesson the pandemic has laid bare in the form of what many business writers call the “Great Resignation” is the death of an idea of live to work in a job that isn’t fulfilling. The idea of work-life balance, and truly doing what you love, even if sometimes what you love doesn’t provide that fat of a paycheck, is one many people took from 2020 and 2021 . . . and this manga, available in English for the first time, is a story of just that: fulfilling your dreams. Based on a true story, we follow the titular Emma in her pursuit to be a Michelin Guide inspector — a professional foodie, if you will. It’s a perfect gift for someone in your life who’s on the precipice of following a dream but just needs a little gentle nudge from the universe to make it happen – – and yes, that person could also be yourself.

Total: $19.95
