Comics Should Be Cheap! (12/11/2013)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Vince’s Picks:

Dead Body Road #1 ($2.99) – I already reviewed this baby and determined it to be a boiling hot winner of a revenge thriller. Fans of tight, cinematic comics should check this out. It’s probably Matteo Scalera’s best work, to date.

Alex + Ada #2 ($2.99) – I really dug the purposefully clinical, sterile feel of “Alex + Ada” #1. It was as if we were viewing this character under a glass dome – a character meant to be the subject of our study. It wasn’t until the end of the issue that we were introduced to the titular “Ada.” I’ll be looking forward to seeing how Luna & Vaughn go about exploring the themes of loneliness and technology.

Manifest Destiny #2 ($2.99) – Alternative history. Snappy, imaginary takes on real historical figures of import. Terrifically playful art from Matthew Roberts. There’s a lot to like about this series, which, if I had to hazard a guess, is being under-ordered at this point. Please give it a chance.

Coffin Hill #3 ($2.99) – Another one you should take a chance on. “Coffin Hill” scratches this itch that I have for pseudo-gothic subject matter and tone. I grabbed the first issue on a whim and don’t regret it for a second.

Godland Finale ($6.99) – Wha-wha-what? I vaguely remember us running a piece on the upcoming finale, but I guess I completely forgot about it. Maybe I never believed it would actually happen. Anyway, if you know what this is, then you know you don’t want to miss it.

Total: $18.95

Matt’s Picks:

Godland Finale ($6.99) – The most important book out this week, hands down, no questions asked. If you skip out on this, I don’t even know what to tell you — but it certainly won’t be kind words, that’s for sure.

Nova #11 ($3.99) – Gerry Duggan’s run begins! Duggan has been doing some fun stuff at Marvel so far, I’d be interested to see what he has up his sleeve for one of the most fun comics Marvel is doing.

Shaolin Cowboy #3 ($3.99) – Last issue was mindblowing. I can’t wait to see what else Darrow has up his sleeve.

Drumhellar #2 ($3.50) – It’s Riley Rossmo! Come on. What other justification do you need? Oh, you want to know if it’s a good comic or not? Ok, yes, it is a good comic — it is a very good comic off to a very promising start. Get it while it’s hot.

Total: $18.47

David’s Picks:

Alex + Ada #2 ($2.99) – I had a torrid love affair with the first issue of this series. I’m in for round 2. Looking forward to meeting Ada, and I hope to some day pair this with watching Spike Jonze’s “Her” and a nice chianti.

Superior Foes of Spider-Man #6 ($2.99) – Maybe the most underrated ongoing today. This comic is hilarious and straight up awesome, and Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber deserve a lot of credit for doing something completely unlike anything else in comics.

Chew #38 ($2.99) – Layman and Guillory doing that voodoo that they do so well, this shit makes me wanna shoop.

Wolverine and the X-Men #39 ($3.99) – DON’T LEAVE ME JASON AARON! DON’T YOU DO IT!! Sigh..it’s going to happen, but it will be a lot of fun on the way out.

Lazarus #5 ($2.99) – Rucka and Lark return for the second arc, and honestly, I think this is a book that is going to get better as we move along. It’s off to a great start, and I think this is the beginning of something more.

Justice League 3000 #1 ($2.99) – I may have to shower afterwards, but I’m genuinely interested. Two weeks in a row I’m buying a DC comic? Ill tidings, unless you’re pro apocalypse.

Total: $18.94 – fun week!
