Comics Should Be Cheap! (12/26/2013)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Vince’s Picks:

The Saviors #1 ($2.99) – James Robinson creator-owned work with J. Bone on art? I’ll be damned if the holidays stand in my way from checking this baby out this week! Robinson is, naturally, known for his strong DC Comics work over the years, but his smaller stuff has been really impressive too. Pick this up – you won’t regret it.

Forever Evil #4 ($3.99) – You might notice that despite my being a “DC guy” – I haven’t been recommending a whole lot of DC books lately, “Wonder Woman” being the big exception. “Forever Evil” hasn’t been great (in my opinion), but Geoff Johns’ ‘New 52’ revival of Captain Marvel (spare the comments section your corrections) and Black Adam was great. I’m down for some more.

Avengers #24.NOW ($3.99) – Brian already used up all the memes in his entry below, so I’ll just say that I’ve really enjoyed all of Jonathan Hickman’s Marvel work to date – including “Infinity” and his “Avengers” stuff. Faults and all, it scratches an awful lot of my itches. Ridiculous numbering aside, of course I’m picking this up!

Total: $10.97

Matt’s Picks:

Saviors #1 ($2.99) – James Robinson and J. Bone’s new creator-owned ongoing debuts this week as the only book from Image, the week that the Big Two usually try and put out the books that they think “matter” the most. If that doesn’t signal to you the faith that Image is throwing behind this title, then nothing else will you.

Well, perhaps aside from me saying “Buy this damned book.” Which is what I am saying to you.

Total: $2.99 – What, are there supposed to be other books this week or something…? You’re joking. Stop it, you kidder.

Brian’s Picks:

The Saviors #1 ($2.99) – James Robinson on an Image book sounds like a no-brainer. And guess what? It is better than you could have ever wished for, while also being weirder, more disconcerting, and more fun. Why am I still selling you on this, go!

Forever Evil #4 ($3.99) – A Black Adam-featured book coming out on Christmas Eve is almost too perfect for me. Thanks, universe!

Avengers #24.NOW ($3.99) – I almost knocked this off my list for the stupid numbering, but I can’t do that to this book. Haters gonna hate, but I’ve been enjoying this run quite a bit. Come at me, bros!

Total: $10.97

David Harper’s Picks:

Saviors #1 ($2.99) – It’s quite the treat that we’re getting a release as cool as this in such a small week. But James Robinson and J. Bone releasing a comic any week is a big deal, and you should be buying it.

Origin II #1 ($4.99) – Maybe I’m a sucker, but if I’m going to be a sucker, it’s going to be for Adam Kubert drawing Wolverine. And that’s what this is. So yeah, whatever, I’ll check it out. Plus, I love acetate covers. Who doesn’t though?

Total: $7.98 – it’s good to save a little money after last week’s insanity

Zach’s Picks

Forever Evil #4/Justice League #26 ($7.98): – Johns’ latest blockbuster reaches it’s halfway point, with some pretty tantalizing teases for fans of his “Green Lantern” run. Sure, the event is starting to feel a little long in the tooth, but this has been some of Johns’ best work in recent memory, and Finch/Reis art is hard to pass up.

Continued below

Doctor Who Special 2013 #1 ($7.99): I’ve been on a huge Who kick lately, and this extremely meta special from Paul Cornell sounds like a real treat, even with the price tag.

Jupiter’s Legacy Giant Sized Edition #1 ($3.99): This is one of favorite new series of the year. Collecting all three issue, making up the first act of the series, this is a fantastic way to catch up.

Total Price: $19.96-I can’t believe I used my full $20 in such a light week.
