Comics Should Be Cheap! (12/28/11)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget.

Follow the cut to see everyone’s picks for the week.

Matt’s Picks

Vengeance #6 ($3.99) – Joe Casey and Nick Dragotta bring their “don’t call it an event” series to a close, and I couldn’t be more excited for the chaos assumedly to ensue.

DMZ #72 ($2.99) – My current favorite Vertigo series comes to an end. There will be sadness.

Secret Avengers #20 ($3.99) – I have always been a loud proponent of this title, and now more so than ever.

Spaceman #3 ($2.99) – After 100 Bullets and two quite awesome Batman stories, you’d be hard pressed to find an intelligent comic fan who would even think of skipping Spaceman.

Avengers – The Children’s Crusade ($3.99) – The wait between issues is becoming excruciating, but you can’t deny that it is usually worth the wait.

Total: $17.95

Walt’s Picks

DMZ #72 ($2.99) – I spent finals week this past semester tearing through DMZ… just in time to watch it end. After the previous issue, I honestly have no idea how the series will end. Will we see a more triumphant ending, a la Transmetropolitan‘s “One percent!” – Spoilers? – or is this issue going to be just as much of a bittersweet downer as the one before it? Whatever the case, Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli have put together one more Vertigo ongoing that will be remembered and recommended for years to come. Thanks for the ride, guys.

The Unwritten #32.5 ($2.99) – The first .5 issue of The Unwritten was the best issue of the series published in 2011. Creators Mike Carey and Peter Gross have one more shot to top it before the year ends, and while it will be tough, I think they can do it. I mean, it has Gilgamesh. Who doesn’t love Gilgamesh? Losers, that’s who.

Spaceman #3 ($2.99) – And another Vertigo book makes the list! I used to be quite critical of writer Brian Azzarello, but he’s really turned his game around this year. Spaceman smacks of classic science fiction given a contemporary edge, and is really one of the most smartly-written miniseries on the shelf these days. But as strong as Azzarello’s writing is, it’s artist Eduardo Risso who really shines in this book. Batman: Knight of Vengeance was just Risso stretching out a bit in comparison, and that’s from someone who loved the art in that book. Keep it coming, man.

Secret Avengers #20 ($3.99) – That Warren Ellis is one of my favorite writers is no secret. That Alex Maleev is one of my favorite artists goes likewise. The two are working together in this issue for – I believe, at least – the first time. You do the math.

FF #13 ($2.99) – Juan Bobillo’s art in the previous issue was… well, kind of terrible, but it’s too late. I’m addicted to Hickman’s touch when it… uh… comes to the kids. Ew. Anyway, there’s such great interplay between the characters in this book, and while it looks like we’ll be seeing more widescreen-style action in Fantastic Four, this title seems to be working on a smaller, but still more plot-driven scale. When it comes to Hickman, that’s fine with me. Just, please, let’s see someone else illustrate it.

Black Panther: The Most Dangerous Man Alive #527 ($2.99) – I guess it’s too late to save one of Marvel’s best books. Poo. Let’s just enjoy the little bit we have left, and pour one for our fallen homie. Or however that saying goes.

Total: $18.94
