Comics Should Be Cheap! (12/31/2013)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Vince’s Picks:

The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys #6 ($3.99) – ‘Killjoys’ probably won’t be regarded the way that “Umbrella Academy” is, but that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t a great comic from a unique voice. The gorgeous Becky Cloonan art didn’t hurt either.

Rocket Girl #3 ($3.50) – I’m having so much fun with this one. It has a killer premise – a futuristic teenage time cop in the ’80s – but it dances to the beat of its own music aside from that.

Aquaman #26 ($2.99) – “Aquaman” has garnered a lot of praise and is widely considered among the top books in the ‘New 52’, critically and whatnot. I couldn’t have disagreed more with that. To me, it was one of the most decompressed books I’ve ever read, overly grim and serious, unless it was trying to make anti-jokes beating back against how lame Aquaman is as a character – which wore pretty thin after the first couple. In comes Jeff Parker to save the book, if you ask me. If his Tweeting can be taken for face-value, he’s going to have a lot more fun with the character than Johns did.

Manhattan Projects #17 ($3.50) – One of the best books on the stands. One of the very few things that absolutely everyone should be reading. It’s not any more complicated than that.

Rachel Rising #22 ($3.99) – #saverachelrising

Total: $17.97

David Henderson’s Picks:

Rocket Girl #3 ($3.50) – I have been pleasantly surprised by “Rocket Girl”. I picked the first issue up on the whim that I liked the look of the cover seeing as it had managed to slip me by and I loved it. Then, the second issue made me love it even more with interesting characters and a not terrible time travel plot. This might be a sleeper hit series.

The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys #6 ($3.99) – Even as someone who was never that big a fan of My Chemical Romance, I found myself loving the first issue of this series. Here, at the last, I simultaneously can’t wait to see how it ends and don’t want to see it go.

Guardians Of The Galaxy #10 ($3.99) – Even if “Guardians Of The Galaxy” has been struggling to find an even flow, I can’t not buy into Bendis and Kevin Maguire working together.

The Manhattan Projects #17 ($3.50) – Jonathan Hickman and Nick Pitarra have been slowly building to something big lately here and I can’t wait to see what it is.

Total: $14.98 – Small week this week, but a good one.

Matt’s Picks:

Rachel Rising ($3.99) – #SaveRachelRising. But, seriously, it’s a great book. I’m happy to put this as my top pick this week, because Terry Moore is telling one hell of a horror story and has been since the series first launched a few years ago. I’m excited to see what a master storyteller like him has in store for the end of the first major arc of the series.

True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #6 ($3.99) – The final issue of the series is sure to bring some more awesome moments care of Becky Cloonan and the musical inspiration of My Chemical Romance. I’m pretty excited to see how it all concludes.

Rocket Girl #3 ($3.50) – One of my favorite new books that debuted this year, I think Rocket Girl is perhaps one of the biggest Image sleeper hits. I also think that that should change, and that more of you should read and find out why this book is so awesome.

Guardians of the Galaxy #10 ($3.99) – Kevin FUCKING Maguire, baby, yes!

New Avengers #13 ($3.99) – First post-Infinity New Avengers issue. Lets find out what happened to our #1 Bad Boy Blackbolt, yeah?

Total: $19.46 — Jeez, what is with all the $3.99 books this week?

Brian’s Picks:

Manhattan Projects #17 ($3.50) – Needles in necks, decapitated heads, talking monsters, and middle fingers up in the air. What more do you want from a comic you sadistic monster?

New Avengers #13.INH ($3.99) – Yay “New Avengers!” Boo “.INH Numbering!”

Aquaman #26 ($2.99) – Jeff Parker takes over for Geoff Johns this month writing “Aquaman.” This is a case of not just a proper spelling of Jeff replacing an inferior one, but it is also a case of tone shifting. Hopefully, Parker can bring some of his humor and heart to what has been a dour, dull book.

Total: $10.48
