Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Vince’s Picks:

American Carnage #4 ($3.99) – Every month I’m bowled over at how raw this comic is. It doesn’t pull any punches, and the final scenes of this very issue may contain some of its most brutal and intriguing moments yet.

High Level #1 ($3.99) – I really liked Rob Sheridan and Barnaby Bagenda’s debut issue of their new Vertigo series. I could make a bunch of trite comparisons to get you to check it out (Blade Runner, Mad Max, etc…) but instead I think I’ll stress to you how good Sheridan already is at writing for the comic book medium, and how Bagenda’s art weaves with Sheridan’s words to sell you on some of the major themes here. Speculative fiction about conflicting classes of people in a post-apocalyptic world is a pretty common setting in sci-fi storytelling today, but the creators do a few key things that can only be done in comics to make this feel fresh. Check it out!

East of West #41 ($3.99) – I’m savoring every issue of “East of West” we have left. For me, its ending will signal the end of an era of creator owned comics that was unparalleled.

Love Romances #1 ($3.99) – Ah, “love” romances. My favorite kind of romances.

Total: $15.96

Matt Lune’s Picks:

High Level #1 ($3.99) – I’m always a sucker for a good post-apocalyptic tale, and this one – about a smuggler traversing the wasteland to protect a religious savior – sounds right up my street.

Age of X-Man: The Amazing Nightcrawler #1 ($3.99) – With “Age of X-Man” fast becoming my favorite X-Event in years, this issue focusing on my favorite member of the mutant superhero team is obviously going to be on my pull list this week.

Love Romances #1 ($3.99) – I’ll be honest, I’ve not read any of these 80th-anniversary specials that Marvel has put out, but this one looks like the one that will break my streak. A sci-fi anthology that looks to explore love and romance sounds like a lot of fun.

Wolverine Infinity Watch #1 ($3.99) – Rounding out the Marvel hat-trick for this week is yet another Wolverine series. Thinking about it, this may be one of the most confusing times to be a Wolverine fan. The Logan that returned in “Marvel Legacy” #1, the one with the Infinity Stone, is not the one currently making a comeback in “Return of Wolverine,” but is, in fact, the focus of this series. Just how and why there’s another Wolverine running around will (hopefully) be answered here.

Total: $15.96

Kate’s Picks:

Exorsisters #5 ($3.99) – This appears to be the close of the first arc, and it’s been such fun to read. The Supernatural fan in me loves the gender-bent twist on the show, with just a little bit more edge and fun. I want the Harrow sisters back and soon!

Love Romances #1 ($3.99) – Who doesn’t love a good love story in their comics?

Avengers Endgame Prelude #3 ($3.99) – It’s weird to be recommending a comic based on a movie which is just a retelling of that movie. Like, why not just go re-watch the movie on Netflix? But, if you don’t have time and you want to get a refresher course Avengers: Endgame it can’t hurt to try this miniseries.

Total: $11.97. It’s a light week, which allows time for your wallet to breathe, and to catch up on other series.

Mark’s Pick:

Comics Will Break Your Heart (HC, $18.99)— Not actually a comic, which is why I get to write the title in italics. Comics Will Break Your Heart is a YA prose novel written by cartoonist Faith Erin Hicks. The book is built on a story that’s all too familiar in comics―a pair of creators make a comic in the 1960s, but the artist of the pair gets screwed over. The story picks up in the present from the point of view of Mir and Weldon. Mir’s the grandchild of the artist and she’s struggling to get enough money together to go to college, and Weldon’s the grandchild of the writer and he’s currently experiencing a windfall thanks to a new film deal. Given that the title of the the novel comes from a Jack Kirby quote, it’s not hard to see what influences the story’s drawing from. Hicks is the main draw for me. I love her as a storyteller and I’m curious to see how she handles a new medium.

Total: $18.99.
