Comics Should Be Cheap (2/26/20)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s Picks:

“Folklords” #4 ($3.99) – At the time Multiversity Comics was putting together the “Best of 2019” lists, the first issue of “Folklords” hadn’t come out yet, so even though it’s technically a 2019 book, it was functionally disqualified. That said, if the quality of the first three issues continues and it sticks the landing on the end of the first miniseries, I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a major player in my 2020 votes.

“Witchfinder: The Reign of Darkness” #4 ($3.99) – What can I say? I’m always a sucker for a Sir Edward Grey story.

“The Legend of Korra: Ruins of the Empire,” Part 3 ($10.99) – Paul, Nick, and I wrote an absolutely enormous review for this. Needless to say, we were engaged by the material. Personally, I think it’s got an ending that retroactively makes Parts 1 and 2 better.

Total: $18.97. (I’m also getting “Monstress” #26 and “Sex Criminals” #27.)

Vince’s Picks:

“Amethyst” #1 ($3.99) – Amethyst’s return to the pages of a DC comic brings an even more exciting return: Amy Reeder. I’m pumped to see what she brings to this book and I’m so glad that DC apparently not only made some sort of amends with her, but are letting her write and draw this one. I cannot wait to dive in.

“Dial H for Hero” #12 ($3.99) – Sam Humphries & Joe Quinones’s celebration of the medium sticks the landing with its typical blend of heartfelt, earnest character moments, silly adventure, and fun artistic references. There’s a real story here, but it’s also supremely satisfying to pour over each issue and try to pick out where each little inspiration comes from.

“Far Sector” #4 ($3.99) – Lantern Jo Mullein has knocked me on my ass. What a great book! A more straightforward lantern title, if you’re feeling left out in the cold by Morrison’s awesome, but admittedly convoluted yarn. One of the best looking books on the superhero spinner rack too, thanks to Jamal Campbell.

“Monstress” #26 ($3.99) – Simply one of the prettiest books on the stands, and perhaps my favorite creator-owned work now that “East of West” is over?

Total: 15.96

Kevin’s Picks:

“X-Men” #7 ($3.99) – There has been teases and teasers and folks saying this would be one of the “red-barred issues” if they’d remembered to promote it as such. I’m ready to move this story forward some more. Bring on the resurrections. All hail Krakoa.

“Giant-Size X-Men: Jean Grey & Emma Frost” #1 ($4.99) – Speaking of more Krakoa, Hickman is launching his series of one-shots this week with none other than Marvel superstar Russell Dauterman. I love, love, love Dauterman’s art and have been sad to not see him on any books since “War of the Realms” ended. Although I have loved the “Marauders” covers. Hopefully this signals him back on more regular interior work soon after this and “Storm” one-shot. A book on Krakoa perhaps?

“Amethyst” #1 ($3.99) – The Wonder Comics worlds at DC have been a lot of fun, and Amy Reeder getting to write, draw, and color an entire miniseries, well, you’d be foolish not to hop on this one.

“Leviathan Dawn” #1 ($4.99) – The “Event Leviathan” miniseries was very, very slow. I loved getting to look at Alex Maleev on a DC book, but boy, not a ton happened in 6 issues. Hopefully this one-shot can convince me that the slow burn return of DC’s covert spy comics will be worth it!

Total: $17.96

Kate’s Picks:

“Classic Pulp Detectives One Shot” ($4.00) – Source Point Press made a name for themselves with horror, so I’m keen to see how they approach classic detective stories. This isn’t a parody like their earlier series “Sham,” but just a straight up reprint. If this takes off, perhaps they can bring back the “Haunted Horror” line IDW did a while back.

“The Complete Shamnibus” ($17.99) – And since I mentioned “Sham” up there, the full six issue run has its own trade this week. I had been having some issues (heh, pun unintended) finding that sixth issue, but I had so much fun with the series it’s certainly worth getting the entire trade.

Total: $21.99. A little over this week (again).

Jason’s Picks:

“Finger Guns” #1 ($3.99) – I love Vault Comics. Like, really love them. May I marry them? But in all honesty, I was granted the chance to read this comic months ago and everything about it was perfect. Ya’ll need to give yourself a chance and read it!

“Black Stars Above” #4 ($3.99) – Well, lookie here, another Vault Comics! When I first heard of “Black Stars Above” I didn’t think I’d like it. But, now I can’t wait for it every month!

“Far Sector” #4 ($3.99) – “Far Sector” was another series I had no interest in. There’s just so many Earth-based Lanterns I tend not to care. That was until I read “Far Sector” and fell in love with everything about it!

“John Constantine: Hellblazer” #4 ($3.99) – Hands down one of the best ongoing DC Comics series going on right now. No, that’s not up for debate.

“Olympia” #4 ($3.99) – I didn’t read the first three issues til about a week ago and now I can’t stop looking at it.

Total: $19.95. Kinda crazy that four of my picks are issue #4’s!

Erik’s Picks:

“Tomorrow” #1 ($3.99) – First and foremost, Peter Milligan is my favorite writer. His career fascinates me, so a new series reuniting him with former Vertigo editor Karen Berger is a crucial pick-up this week. Every Peter Milligan story evolves from a specific interest the writer develops. For “Tomorrow,” Milligan saw the prominence of youth activists like Emma Gonzalez and Greta Thunberg and examines what inspires young people to overcome great adversities in ways that adults may not be able to. Keeping that in mind, Milligan also wants to reconcile the ways young people can mirror the ugliness in society. Throw in a computer virus that jumps the species barrier killing all adults and I’m sure we have another memorable comic book from one of the greats. I’ve been waiting for this one for a while, so I’m very, very, very happy to be able to read it.

Total: $3.99
