Comics Should Be Cheap (2/3/2016)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

Nailbiter #20 ($2.99) – “Nailbiter” continues to be one of the more interesting and creepy books out there, even twenty issues into the series. With the apparent death of a major character, looks like things are about to get just a little stranger in “Nailbiter”.

Paper Girls #5 ($2.99) – “Paper Girls” is absolutely not the book I thought it would be when it began, but it has been anything but boring. Time travel, weird tech, dinosaurs, “Paper Girls” seemingly has it all. That Cliff Chiang art never ceases to be absolutely beautiful, and this issue surely won’t be any different.

Manifest Destiny Vol. 3 ($14.99) – Easily one of my favorite books out there, “Manifest Destiny” collects its third trade this week. In this volume, Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery discover an intelligent race of bird people, and also discover the terrible creature that preys on them. Plenty of action and questions decisions to be had in this trade.

Total: $20.97 – I go over just a little this week, but it’s well worth it.

Brian’s Picks:

Midnighter #9 ($2.99) – I fear that this book is going the way of the dodo, and that bums me out, because this is a great, great book. Steve Orlando has nailed the tone, and that tone adds to what is, perhaps, the most fun book DC is currently publishing.

Sheriff of Babylon #3 ($3.99) – Tom King? Tom King!

Spider-Man #1 ($3.99) – On a theoretical level, I would be supporting this book however I could, because I am a big proponent of legacy characters. Plus, Miles is a great character and the book looks gorgeous.

Obi-Wan and Anakin #2 ($3.99) – The first issue didn’t blow me away, but I want to like this, so I’m giving it a second go. Don’t disappoint me, Jedis!

The Vision #4 ($3.99) – Tom King? Tom King!

Total: $18.95

Keith’s Picks:

Klaus #3 ($3.99) –Grant Morrison’s Santa origin tale continues with Dan Mora’s gorgeous art illustrating another Morrison classic-in-the-making.

Swamp Thing #2 ($2.99) – I was pleasantly surprised by the writing in the first issue of this miniseries by Swampy’s co-creator, Len Wein. What I wasn’t surprised by was Kelley Jones’ breathtaking art. He still conjures magic with his pen.

Action Comics #49 ($3.99) – Greg Pak and Aaron Kuder have been one of the essential reasons why the de-powered Superman arc has been so much fun.

Midnighter #9 ($2.99) – With the Suicide Squad interacting with Midnighter in this issue, the action is sure to be bloody and intricate in its gruesomeness. Steve Orlando and Aco are another excellent DC creative team that are bringing their passion to a title.

Batman and Robin Eternal #18 ($2.99) – Harper Row gains the spotlight in this issue and that’s a good thing for this exciting and well-executed weekly series that is quickly coming to a close.

Total: $16.95 – There’s enough money left over to buy either “Batgirl” #48 or “Paper Girls” #6. Both are $2.99 and both belong in your regular pull!

Matt Garcia’s Picks:

Shutter #18 ($3.99) – It’s back. Keatinge and del Duca continue plowing forward, deepening their mysteries, and just generally turning in one of the best ongoings right now, no joke.

Mirror #1 ($2.99) – Man, what’s going on with “8House”? Originally supposed to appear in that series, this new series from Emma Rios and Hwei Lim promises a terrorist talking dog, and honestly that’s as far as I read before I added it to my pull.

Paper Girls #5 ($2.99) – Expect an intense but ultimately frustrating conclusion to this latest Brian K. Vaughan series arc. Cliff Chiang, meanwhile, proves he’s more than adept at matching everything BKV throws at him on the page.

Total: $9.97.
