Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

Fissure #1 ($3.99) – This is just the second book from new publisher Vault Comics, but it looks to be pretty promising. Tim Daniel has co-written some of my favorite horror from the last couple years in “Curse” and “Burning Fields”, so I’m excited to see him tackle a new book in that vein. Plus, the art from Patricio Delpeche looks pretty damn good.

Great Divide #5 ($3.99) – This book has been pretty enjoyable, despite how often Dynamite’s creator-owned stuff is a miss for me. This issue delves into the origin on the central mystery of the book and also features some prose stories set in that world as extra material. Pretty cool.

Birthright #22 ($2.99) – “Birthright” continues to be a lot of fun and consistently good. Big things are happening right now in the story and I can’t wait to see where it all leads.

Green Valley #5 ($2.99) – This series continues to surprise me with how much I like it. The reveal of the “wizard” last issue put an interesting twist into the whole story. I’m interested to see where they go with this, as the book hits its halfway point.

Total: $13.96

Vince’s Picks:

All-Star Batman #7 ($4.99) – Scott Snyder’s Batman comics are so popular and well-selling, they don’t really need my exposure here. That said, Tula Lotay is the artist on this one and she’s one of my absolute favorites. I’ll shout it from the rooftops.

Justice League of America Rebirth #1 ($2.99) – Steve Orlando and Jody Houser did an incredibly good job of making me care about the 4 members of the new “Justice League of America” that they decided to focus on for the previously released one-shots. The “Killer Frost” issue was probably my favorite, and the best introduction to the team book, but all 4 issues were varying levels of really good. I can’t wait to see the team come together, and I never thought I’d say that about a book with Lobo as a prominent character.

East of West #31 ($3.99) – Still my favorite creator-owned comic on the market. Still the richest world in comics.

Motor Crush #3 ($3.99) – Stewart, Fletcher, and Tarr are a brand, by now. And they’re a brand that always delivers.

Total: $15.96

Matthew’s Picks:

Birthright #22 ($2.99) – Williamson and Bressan’s fantasy epic is one of the best monthly comics on the stands, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Black Science #28 ($3.99) – Remender’s spiritual follow-up to “Fear Agent” has been big bombastic fun, and last issue saw Scalera bring new dimensions (pun intended) to the story. Can’t wait to see what happens next.

Wicked + The Divine #26 ($3.99) – “WicDiv” continues its streak as one of Jamie and Kieron’s best collaborations. Things continue getting darker. I’m afraid for my favorites.

All-Star Batman #7 ($4.99) – Tula Lotay drops by for a Poison Ivy one-shot. Any opportunity for new Tula Lotay comics is one I would not recommend passing on.

Wonder Woman #16 ($2.99) – Last but not least, never pass on buying a new issue of “Wonder Woman”.

Total: $18.95

Matt’s Picks:

Steven Universe #1 ($3.99) – New Steven series! Boom! always does well in getting interesting and cool talent to contribute to their licensed material, and it’s no different here. Melanie Gillman turns in the script with Katy Farina on art. I don’t even know what the story’s supposed to be about, because that combination is worth the admission.

Death be Damned #1 ($3.99) – Another new release from Boom! finds Ben Acker, Ben Blacker, Andrew MIller, and Hannah Christenson turning in this revisionist Western about a woman who cannot die until she wreaks vengeance on her family’s killers. Things probably will not end well.

Continued below

Fissure #1 ($3.99) – With all this talk about walls dividing the United States, perhaps this story about a town literally severed in two will have even more pertinence.

Total: $11.97.

Brian’s Picks:

Black History In Its Own Words ($14.99) – Sometimes comics are more than just fun entertainment; sometimes they are important documents of social change. This book is the latter – and it is the most important book you can buy this week.

Justice League of America Rebirth #1 ($2.99) – Steve Orlando and Ivan Reis are putting together a “new” kind of team. The roster should make this an instant buy if the creative team already doesn’t do that: Black Canary, Vixen, Killer Frost, Lobo, the Ray, the Atom, and Batman. Woah baby.

Superwoman #7 ($2.99) – The most bonkers book DC is publishing, in the best possible way.

Total: $20.97 – It’s worth it to rob Peter to pay Paul this week.
