Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kevin’s Picks:

“Decorum #1 ($4.99) – I have no idea how Hickman has the time to be both Head of X and do much of anything else, but here we are, another Image book. I’m a sucker for Hickman’s creator-owned work (can’t wait til he returns to “Black Monday Murders”) and Mike Huddleston’s preview art has been amazing. Count me in.

“Cable” #1 ($4.99) – This was not a book I was expecting the line to be getting this soon or quickly, but who can say no to Phil Noto? Bring on Kid Cable I guess?

“X-Men” #8 ($3.99) – The flagship Dawn of X book hasn’t been bad, but it has been a slow burn of developing more concepts for the island nation of Krakoa. Well it looks like that’s changing soon, especially with the new announced “X of Swords” event coming this summer. Bring on Mahmud Asrar this issue and Brood and space nonsense!

“The Flash” #751 ($3.99) – #750 got me excited again about this book after catching up on the last few issues and now I’m all in with Godspeed being back and Paradox wreaking havoc.

Total: $17.96

Jason’s Picks:

”The Green Lantern Season Two” #2 ($3.99)‒ Grant Morrison, Liam Sharp, nuff’ said. I feel like I say that a lot, nonetheless I mean it every time I do.

”Blackwood: The Mourning After” #2 ($3.99)‒ I got into this series late, I honestly only gave it a chance because I love the art duo. Their work is gorgeous, which carries over into “Blackwood: The Mourning After.” So, why not carry on?

”Death To The Army Of Darkness” #2 ($3.99)‒ As a fan of the Evil Dead movie series, and Army of Darkness being my favorite, trust me when I preach how great this comic is. If you are a fan of the movies at all, it’s a must read!

”White Ash” #3 ($3.99)‒ I saw a few mutuals on Twitter tweeting about this and found it quite interesting. I’ve enjoyed what I’ve read with omly a few speed bumps along the way.

Total: $15.96. Another cheap week, but my wallet loves me.

Mark’s Picks:

“Tales from Harrow County: Death’s Choir” #4 ($3.99) – The ‘Death’s Choir’ arc pulls that rather clever magic trick of not only ending well and in a satisfying manner, but also leaving its reader wanting more. This is a damn fine issue. The “Tales from Harrow County” series has absolutely put its best foot forward.

“The Storyteller: Ghosts” #1 ($3.99) – I haven’t checked out BOOM! Studio’s “Storyteller” series at all yet. I loved the show as a kid, but haven’t really returned to it as an adult. Really what cuaght my attention was Márk László’s involvement. He did the art on ‘The Miser’s Gift,’ my favorite story in the “Hellboy Winter Special 2019,” which just so happened to have a very Storyteller-esque feel. If someone’s going to capture the spark of the show, it could be László.

“Blackwood: The Mourning After” #2 ($3.99) – Always up for more “Blackwood.” Evan Dorkin’s got big plans for this series, and I’m looking forward to see ’em come to fruition.

Total: $11.97.

Vince’s Picks:

Decorum #1 ($4.99) – “What if an assassin was very polite?” is a pitch that sounds like a joke I would do about a fake comic pitch. In most other configurations of talent, I would have absolutely no interest in yet another “eccentric assassin” book from Image, but Jonathan Hickman has earned the right to a first issue auto-buy from this comic fan. Mike Huddleston on the art duties is an equally appetizing proposition.

Continued below

Cable #1 ($4.99) – Gerry Duggan’s “Marauders”, on most months, is my favorite post-‘Dawn of X’ title. Duggan’s typical mix of humor and pathos has melded so well with the Hickman status quo. I look forward to seeing what Duggan does on his next title. Can he keep a good thing going?

Total: $9.98
