Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kyle’s Picks:

Assassination Nation #1 ($3.99) – Kyle Starks has already proved he can mix humor and action and make a really great comic. See “Kill Them All” or “Sexcastle” if you need proof. I love Erica Henderson’s style and really excited to see how it mixes with Starks’ writing. I also love the idea of 20 assassins working together like in a big buddy cop movie.

Shredder In Hell #2 ($3.99) – I will read anything when it comes to Mateus Santolouco doing art for the turtles. The concept is great and I thought Santolouco killed the first issue. And really who doesn’t love Shredder?

General Grievous #1($3.99) – After his amazing introduction in Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars cartoon he got the short shaft in Revenge of the Sith. He deserved better and hopefully Jody Houser can redeem him.

Head Lopper #11 (5.99) – Do I need to sell anyone on this book anymore? We all agree right?

Total: 17.96

Kevin’s Picks:

“The Magnificent Ms. Marvel” #1 ($3.99) – “Ms. Marvel” was one of the purest and best books Marvel put out over the last 5 years. With the end of the era, G. Willow Wilson and her co-collaborators pass the torch to Saladin Ahmed and Minkyu Jung as Kamala gains a new adjective in her title. Ahmed has been doing really fun and authentic work with Miles since he relaunched his title in December, and I hope this is more of the same. I am really, really looking forward to this debut. Also if anyone wants to buy and ship me that Babs Tarr variant I am 100% open.

“Runaways” #19 ($3.99) – Kris Anka may have departed this book with last issue, but the hijinks and conflict look to continue as Andres Genolet takes over art duties. Rainbow Rowell, Anka, and Matt Wilson were crafting my favorite ongoing Marvel book of 2018, and while I will miss Anka, I am excited for where the story goes from here.

“Wonder Twins” #2 ($3.99) – Mark Russell and Stephen Byrne had such a hilarious and perfect debut last month. I am so glad this book exists and is putting the wonder in Wonder Comics

“Calamity Kate” #1 ($3.99) – Two weeks in a row of new Mags Visaggio books? *Italian chef kiss emoji*.

Total: $15.96

Kate’s Picks:

Riverdale Season 3 #1 ($3.99) – I’m not a watcher of Riverdale, but I have enjoyed the tie in comics. I’m glad Archie Comics decided to bring them back, but it’s not clear to me if these will be like the previous series (stand-alone stories with the characters) or tie more directly into the TV show. Only one way to find out!

Magnificent Ms. Marvel #1 ($3.99) – New Kamala, who dis? If the three pages we saw in the finale to G. Willow Wilson’s series are any indication, Ms. Marvel is in very good hands.

Calamity Kate #1 ($3.99) – Monster hunter + Friend of Multiversity Magdalene Visaggio + character named Kate + redhead. What’s not for me to love?

Total: $11.97. Keeping it light this week.

Vince’s Picks:

Fullmetal Alchemist: The Complete Four-Panel Comics TPB ($12.99) – These little irreverent strips are collected from a variety of different sources, so unless you’re the biggest FMA fan on planet Earth, chances are you haven’t seen a lot of these. They’re adorable, funny, and now that they’re all collected in one place, a “must-have” for fans of the property.

Transformers #1 ($3.99) – I try to hop on to “Transformers” comics every time they do a relaunch or a big event and I always seem to bounce off of them. This promises to be a completely new starting point origin, so let’s see if this series can grab me for the long term this time around.

Total: $16.98

Mark’s Pick:

“Hicotea” ($18.95)— This is the second book in Lorena Alvarez’s “Nightlights” series (the first of which was nominated for an Eisner for Best Children’s Publication last year). I had no idea this was even going to be a series of books, but given how much I adored the first book, I couldn’t be happier to learn about its existence. “Nightlights” was one of those books I loved immediately, and yet over time I grew to love it still more. I’ve dragged more than a few people over to my bookcase to pull it down and point at the pages going, “This is what good visual storytelling looks like,” and then go on a whole rant about it. Alvarez absolutely earned that Eisner nomination.

Total: $18.95. Only one book. No doubt it’s totally worth it though.
