Comics Should Be Cheap (3/18/20)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kate’s Picks:

“Outlawed” #1 ($3.99) – Sadly, the kids are not all right in the Marvel Universe. I enjoyed Eve Ewing on “Ironheart” for her realistic teenager/young person voice so I’m glad she’s back for another series.

“Wicked Things”#1 ($3.99) – More John Allison in my life (and more Max Sarin) is always a good thing. This will fill the “Giant Days”-sized hole in my heart, no doubt.

“Knight of the Ice” Vol. 1 ($12.99) – As I try to broaden my tastes to include more manga (and anime), one anime that folks can’t seem to stop talking about is Yuri!!! On Ice. This also sounds like it would be a nice read-alike to that series, even if the romance aspect of it reads cheesy.

Total: $20.97

Jason’s Picks:

”Tartarus” #2 ($3.99)‒ I had never heard of “Tartarus”, yet when I read the first issue I couldn’t stop talking about it. There is so much to love about the series and It’s unlike anything being published right now in America. If you haven’t checked out the first issue, you absolutely need too! Nonetheless, I expect this series to be one of my favorites of 2020.

”Wicked Things” #1 ($3.99)‒ I finally made my way through “Giant Days” this year and loved every page of it. Now with the team making a new series, I have high hopes. Especially after reading the synopsis.

”DCeased: Unkillables” #2 ($4.99)‒ The original series surprised me, and “Unkillables” is just as great. With Taylor’s recent announcement of a second DCeased, I honestly cannot get enough.

Total: $12.97. Another cheap week, but you won’t see my wallet complain!

Kevin’s Picks:

“Outlawed” #1 ($4.99) – Teen activism and a new status quo for the Marvel Universe. It all starts here friends. It’s been great to watch the Eve Ewing rise to prominence at Marvel and I am so ready to see her take on the “Champions.” Plus great Kim Jacinto art for round one.

“Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen” #4 ($4.99) – Hell has arisen. How does the war between The Batman Who Laughs and Lex end? I got to interview Tynion at C2E2 a few weeks ago , and while tight-lipped on what’s coming, he laid out a lot of excitement for this finale. Look for that interview up later today and pick this book up Wednesday!

“Captain Marvel” #16 ($3.99) – There are a number of anniversary books out this week, but not another one you can get for $3.99! “Captain Marvel” is celebrating its 150th issue with the end of a really fun arc, with “Empyre” tie-ins picking up soon. Kelly Thompson has been doing underrated work on this title, but now’s your chance to celebrate 150!

“Runaways” #31 ($3.99) – Finale, my (still) favorite Marvel work hits the end of an arc this week as well. What’s gonna happen to the new J-Team?

Total: $17.96. There are of course a number of other great books out this week. While you should all be washing your hands and social distancing, you should be in contact with your LCS about how to support them in this time! Also a great time to think about buying digitally. Either way, keep in touch with folks, stay connected, and stay safe and healthy!

Vince’s Picks:

X-Ray Robot #1 ($3.99) – Multiversity Comics’ #1 Mike & Laura Allred fan checking in to recommend picking this one up. I have an intense fondness for Allred’s “Madman”, and this seems to be cut from a similar cloth. A “weird” superhero with just a sprinkling of classic pulp sci-fi elements to it. After great stints with Marvel and DC, I’m looking forward to seeing Allred return to his own headspace as a writer, to seem him continue to work out the things that he’s interested in and thinking about. Plus, you know it’s going to look incredible. Just look at that cover!

Robin 80th Anniversary 100 Page Super Spectacular #1 ($9.99) – DC Comics has been knocking their anniversary/milestone specials out of the park lately. This one is a little uneven compared to the great “Wonder Woman” and “Flash” ones that were recently released, but the highs are very high. This special also does some very welcome “data page” type stuff that reminds me of collecting trading cards in the ’90s. The kid in me appreciated the detailed look back at all the Robins over the years (even Stephanie Brown!)

Usagi Yojimbo #9 ($3.99) – As long as the master continues to craft these stories, I’ll be there supporting it.

Total: $17.97
