Comics Should Be Cheap! (3/28/2018)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kate’s Picks:

Hungry Ghosts #3 ($3.99) – I like horror. And I like food. Put the two together and you have a very creative way of telling horror stories. Based on the Japanese Edo-period game of 100 Candles, a storytelling competition where the goal is to freak out the audience more than your predecessor, the focus here is on the macabre in the culinary arts (in this issue, on the concept of “the way to one’s heart is through the stomach”). It’s a good idea not to read this while eating (sadly I speak from experience), but I’ve still enjoyed every single one of these issues and wish it was more than just a four issue miniseries.

Jessica Jones #18 ($3.99) – I would be remiss not to include Brian Michael Bendis’ swan song to the hard drinking PI that birthed two comic series and a TV show. Godspeed, Mr. Bendis. Alias Investigations will miss you.

Dark Nights: Metal #6 ($4.99) – This is another book that if I didn’t include on this list, the general comics populace would be quite cross with me. With this we end the series that will set up the next arc of all sorts of DC storytelling. And if you read our recap of the DC “Meet the Publishers” panel from Wondercon this past weekend, you know what’s next is a doozy. Don’t you want to see how the seeds for what could be (as we called it in our panel recap) “appropriately nuts” are sown?

Mystik U ($5.99) – Another series I wish could have gotten an upgrade into an ongoing, for there is quite the storytelling potential contained here.

Total: $18.96

Matt Lune’s Picks:

Daredevil #600 ($5.99) – “Daredevil” has been one of my favorite Marvel books for nearly two decades now, which is a strange thing to admit about my age. Nevertheless, seeing it reach issue 600 is pretty great, so I’m looking forward to seeing what they pull out of the bag.

Dark Knights Metal #6 ($4.99) – This is it, the end of what’s been my favorite DC Event for many, many years. It’s at the point where I’m more excited for what’s coming next than the finale of the event itself, but I’m still eager to see how it ends.

Terrifics #2 ($2.99) – Speaking of what comes after “Metal.” While the first issue of “Terrifics” felt a little more like set-up than actually capturing the potential of what this series could be, I think once they get past that stage this will be a fun series.

Abbott #3 ($3.99) – I’m enthralled in the supernatural noir mystery that Ahmed and Kivela are presenting, and even though this is issue 3 of 5, I can see this being the start of a long and successful journey for Abbott.

Mother Panic Gotham A.D #1 ($3.99) – ‘Milk Wars’ set all of the various Young Animal series up with very different status quos moving forward, with “Mother Panic” perhaps gifted with the strangest and most intriguing. Thrust ten years into the future, and a Gotham City without Batman, Violet Page is given much-needed breathing room to establish herself out from under Batman’s shadow.

Total: $21.95 – Slightly over but what can I say, DC are having a great week!

Justin’s Picks:

Dark Nights: Metal #6 ($4.99) – I’ve been a little less enthusiastic about this event as it’s progressed, but I’m still really excited to see how Snyder and Capullo pull it all together for the finale.

Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: Coronation #2 ($3.99) – The first issue was everything I wanted for the start of Jareth’s origin, so I’m all-in for this series.

Continued below

Mystik U #3 ($5.99) – I feel like this series is flying under the radar because of the format and release schedule, but it’s excellent. Fans of Zatanna, and the mystic side of the DCU, should definitely pick it up.

The Terrifics #2 ($2.99) – This is the best of the ‘New Age of DC Heroes’ books so far, and I’m excited to see where Lemire and company take it.

Total: $17.96. This is a huge week. If I were to go over budget, I would be picking up “Abbott” #3, Black Magick #11, and Redneck #11 as well.

Mark’s picks:

“Saga” #50 ($3.99)— Why should you be reading “Saga”? Well, it’s won the Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series in 2013… and 2014, 2015, and 2017. So, y’know, it’s pretty good. Of course, this is a landmark issue too. Fifty issues isn’t anything to sniff at, but I gotta admit, I’m more excited about “Saga” hitting #54 in July… wrapping up the ninth arc, which means a new deluxe hardcover collection should soon be on the way.

“Bad Machinery – Volume 4: The Case of the Lonely One” (Pocket Edition, $12.99)— I keep meaning to mention this series on Comic Should Be Cheap, but the standard editions have a $20 price tag that’s made it a little challenging without going grossly over budget or neglecting other books I want to talk about. No so for the pocket editions though. Obviously I prefer the larger editions, but given this is a landscape format book, the larger editions do tend to jut out of bookcases, and that’s not for everyone—the pocket edition is definitely more bookshelf friendly. If you don’t know, “Bad Machinery” is written and drawn by John Allison (the writer of “Giant Days”). It’s a webcomic that ran from 2009 to 2017, about a group of teenagers that solve mysteries. Check it out.

Total: $16.98.
