Comics Should Be Cheap (3/4/20)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Jason’s Picks:

”Money Shot” #5 ($3.99)‒ I love Vault Comics and have loved “Money Shot” the whole way through. After the ending of Issue #4 it seems the 5th issue is the beginning of a new arc and I couldn’t be more excited!

”Billionaire Island” #1 ($3.99)‒ I’ve been a fan of Mark Russell since I fell in love with “Wonder Twins.” Since then I’ve gone back and read a lot of his other works. One that always stood out was DC’s “The Flintstones.” For “Billionaire Island” he is working with the team he had on “The Flintstones” and once it was announced I knew I had to read it.

”Mirka Andolfo’s Mercy” #1 ($3.99)‒ Anything Andolfo creates I’ll read. Hands down, I don’t even need to know what it is to be sold.

”Strange Adventures” #1 ($4.99)‒ I’m still at adds about how I feel about “Strange Adventures”, yet I’ll give it a chance.

Total: $16.96. This week is pretty cheap, which for me is awesome! That’s because I spent so much damn money last week.

Kate’s Picks:

“The Magnificent Ms. Marvel” #13 ($3.99) – Just when Kamala Khan thought things were getting calm . . . there’s a new hero in town. It’s been hinted that this could also be a potential love interest for Kamala, and while I’m not keen on the love triangle aspects, this is representation in comics that we seriously need.

“Blood on the Tracks” Vol. 1 ($12.95) – If you’ve read this column regularly, you know I love horror. The best horror is that which plays on your mind, and this manga looks to be right in that vein. And sometimes, as this manga will show us, the horror is closest to home.

“Daphne Byrne” #3 ($3.99) – This is the one Hill House book I’m still on the fence about, which is surprising since it has that Penny Dreadful vibe, and I loved that show. I’m staying hopeful that it gets on the upswing as we get to the midpoint of the series.

Total: $20.93

Vince’s Picks:

“The Flash” #750 ($7.99) – A near-perfect celebration issue for one of DC Comics’ most popular and beloved characters. There’s a quality extension of Joshua Williamson’s “Flash” run, an ode to Jay Garrick, a return to the gorgeous-looking Buccellato/Manapul New 52 run, a fun Wolfman/Rossmo joint with tons of nods to Silver Age “Flash” covers, and a Geoff Johns/Scott Kolins Captain Cold story that brings the house down with a heart-warming twist. All of these are great in their own way. And if you’re invested in the current goings-on with the DCU meta-narrative, the issue ends with a “Flash Forward”-epilogue that kind of blows open the doors on what the “Generation Zero” event might bring. If only that part were written by someone else!

“Outer Darkness/Chew” #1 ($3.99) – A crossover between one of the best (and quirkiest) creator-owned comics of its bygone era and one of the current best creator-owned books on the shelves.

“Pink Lemonade” #2 ($4.99) – Nick Cagnetti’s irreverent independent comic has the spirit of Kirby and the humor of Allred. “Pink Lemonade” comics are few and far between, but I definitely recommend checking them out, if you can get your hands on them.

Total: $16.97

Kevin’s Picks:

“The Flash” #750 ($7.99) – I got to talk to Joshua Williamson this weekend at C2E2 (interview up later today) and he got my hyped for this book. This is gonna be starting to tie together all the threads from Williamson’s run and have us start thinking towards the end. Plus possible 5G teases and maybe Jay Garrick? This is a must get.

Continued below

“Batman” #90 ($3.99) – It’s only been a few months but I can tell you I’ve missed Jorge Jiménez. Hands down my favorite artist at DC right now. Let’s go!

“Strange Academy” #1 ($4.99) – Another book on a lot of people’s minds at C2E2 was the debut of “Strange Academy.” The Marvel Universe has a lot of untapped magic potential and this book is gonna bring it all to ya. It’s Harry Potter in the Marvel Universe, but at least it’s in New Orleans!

“Daredevil” #19 ($3.99) And finally “Daredevil,” still one of Marvel’s best under-the-radar books. Zdarsky and this great team of artists are churning out moody, gritty gold. Marco Chechetto is back for this two-issue arc. Bring on ‘Inferno.’

Total: $20.96

Mark’s Pick:

“ApocalyptiGirl: An Aria for the End Times” (second edition, $19.99) – Our own Alice W. Castle wrote a glowing review of this book when it first came out back in 2015. This new edition promises two new short stories plus a sketchbook section (an essential for any deluxe edition). I had so much fun with this story the first time around, I don’t mind springing for it again, especially when the presentation is such a nice step up. (It’s a hardcover this time.) Plus it gives me hope that we’ll see more of this series someday. And I know I’m likely in for a long wait―I believe Andrew MacLean has a nine-book plan for “Head Lopper,” which should keep him busy for quite some time. Happily, I enjoy “Head Lopper” just as much as “ApocalyptiGirl.” If only MacLean had a clone…

Total: $19.99. Just the one this week, but it’s a good ’un.
