Comics Should Be Cheap! (3/19/2014)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Vince’s Picks:

White Suits #2 ($3.99) – Toby Cypress went all nutso on issue #1 of this. I’m definitely coming back for more. It’s an art clinic on breaking all of the rules.

Animal Man #29 ($2.99) – I don’t think I ever appreciated “Animal Man” enough. Well, at least not since before the much ballyhooed ‘Rotworld’ arc. When the ‘New 52’ started, I was excited because a lot of books looked like they would be like this. Now I wish DC were making more of them.

Wonder Woman #29 ($2.99) – Here’s another one of ’em. And with the end in sight, too.

Zero #6 ($2.99) – Thankfully I have books like “Zero” to dig me out of the doldrums. Oh wait, you’re going to break my heart with your story this month, “Zero”? You’re gonna do me like that?

Sovereign #1 ($2.99) – Chris Roberson and Paul Maybury doing fantasy? Hell yeah, I’ll put that on my pull list, Comic Book Guy.

Ms. Marvel #2 ($2.99) – The first book was pure imagination. Like, when I sit here and think about it, I start to hear Gene Wilder singing “Pure Imagination.” And then I start picturing that same song playing over that unsettling Mitch McConnell campaign ad. Not joking.

Total: $18.94

Brian’s Picks:

B.P.R.D. #117 ($3.50) – I’m not kidding, folks – this might be in the top 5 arcs the series has ever produced. It is that good. James Harren is a beast!

Wonder Woman #29 ($2.99) – Knowing that this run is coming to a close makes each issue even sweeter. Dear lord will I miss this book.

Sex Criminals #5 ($3.50) – If you’re the one person on the planet who isn’t reading this already, shame on you.

All-New Invaders #3 ($3.99) – James Robinson at Marvel hasn’t been a disappointment yet, but I am excited to see this book kick into high gear.

Superior Foes of Spider-Man #10 ($2.99) – The most underrated Big 2 book out there right now, hands down.

Total: $16.97

David Harper’s Picks:

B.P.R.D. #117 ($3.50) – Maybe one of the three or four best issues of B.P.R.D. ever here. James Harren, ya’ll. Get on the bandwagon.

American Vampire: Second Cycle #1 ($3.99) – While I found The Blacklist, the final arc of the first cycle, to be a bit of a struggle, this was once a great, great book. I’m betting the return for Snyder and Albuquerque will be fantastic.

Sex Criminals #5 ($3.50) – The return is here. One of my favorite comics around today, and a book whose letters column is more rewarding by itself than many entire comics.

Rocket Girl #4 ($3.50) – This title gets loaded with bonus points because it makes me happier than pretty much anything else I read. That’s worth a lot, in my book.

Ms. Marvel #2 ($2.99) – Another book that gets major bonus points for making me happy, but seriously, an extra-sized gap between issues #1 and #2? What gives?

Zero #6 ($2.99) – Vanessa Del Rey joins the party, although it’s hard to really call what happens in Zero a “party”, isn’t it?

Total: $20.47 – beg your significant other or parents for two quarters

Matt’s Picks:

Animal Man #29 ($2.99) – This is the end. My DC pull list is now down to two, and I will very much miss this title. Lemire was doing great things. Oh, and he’s illustrating some of this final issue, too? All the better.

Continued below

Sex Criminals #5 ($3.50) – The end of the first arc! I hope you people like butts. Seriously.

Zero #6 ($2.99) – The beginning of the second arc! I hope you like heartbreaking moments. Seriously.

American Vampire Second Cycle #1 ($3.99) – “American Vampire” is the book that made us all fall in love with Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque, and it is wonderful to see that this title will be back on the stands on a regular basis again. These vampires don’t fucking sparkle, kids.

Unwritten v2: Apocalypse #3 ($3.99) – The end of “The Unwritten” has been pretty on fire since coming back, and I for one do not plan to miss a single issue.

Undertow #2 ($2.99) – I was very surprised by the debut issue of this series and how much I enjoyed it. This wasn’t a book I particularly knew anything about, but it came out of nowhere for me and just knocked my socks off. Very excited for the second issue.

Total: $20.45 – Oops, better dig in those couches for quarters!

Zach’s Picks

Wonder Woman #29 ($2.99) Duh, this is still basically the best book at DC right now.

Animal Man #29 ($2.99) Another of DC’s gems comes to an end, this time with some gorgeous Jeff Lemire art. The pull list shrinketh.

American Vampire: Second Cycle #1 ($3.99) One of the pillars of Vertigo returns, and I for one can’t wait to see what Snyder and Albuquerque have in store.

Sex Criminals #5 ($3.50) Guys, let’s get skeevy.

Zero #6 ($2.99) This book always looks incredible, but Vanessa Del Ray brings it to a whole ‘nother level, ya’ll.

Total: $16.46 – I gave you a little lee-way, just listen to your heart.

David Henderson’s Picks:

Ms. Marvel #2 ($2.99) – New “Ms. Marvel”! YEEEAAAAH!

Animal Man #29 ($2.99) – No more “Animal Man”! BOOOOOOO!

Daredevil #1 ($3.99) – All-New “Daredevil”! YEEEAAAAH!

Sex Criminals #5 ($3.50) – All-New-er “Sex Criminals”! UHHHHHHH?

ZERO #6 ($2.99) – All-ZERO-ier “ZERO”! I GUESS..?

Total: $16.46
