Comics Should Be Cheap! (3/26/2014)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Vince’s Picks:

Silver Surfer #1 ($3.99) – Dan Slott writing Silver Surfer as Doctor Who and Mike Allred drawing it? Why, that’s one of the most fantastic concepts I’ve heard in maybe forever.

Iron Patriot #1 ($3.99) – Ales Kot’s Marvel and DC work has, so far, been just as quality as his creator-owned work. In a relative way, of course. “Iron Patriot” looks to be a little more harrowing than “Secret Avengers” was, but if there’s one thing “Zero” has proved, it’s that Ales Kot can do harrowing. Also, yay for Garry Brown, who is an excellent artist that was doing some great work on “The Massive.”

All-New Ghost Rider #1 ($3.99) – Have you seen Tradd Moore’s preview art for this? Mein gott.

Superior Spider-Man #30 ($3.99) – “Superior Spider-Man” is winding down and the anticipation for Slott’s post-Superior work is ramping up. Don’t let these last issues go forgotten in all of the hoopla though – this was one of the most special and satisfying “maxi-series” in modern Marvel history.

Marvel Knights X-Men #5 ($3.99) – Brahm Revel got a chance to play with the X-Men characters for a while and I thought it seemed like he had a fun time doing it. This wasn’t a comic that would change your life or anything, but it was a fast-paced, fun romp using a lot of fan favorite X-Men from a creator that you probably never thought you’d see on an X-Men book. Solid stuff.

Total: $19.95

David’s Picks

Alex + Ada #5 ($2.99) – I think this might be my favorite comic so far of 2014, and it’s certainly the one I anticipate the most on a monthly basis.

Silver Surfer #1 ($3.99) – Mike Allred drawing Silver Surfer. No other words necessary.

Deadly Class #3 ($3.50) – Of the two Rick Remender Image books that launched recently, this is by far my favorite. Wes Craig is a big part, but the other part is I just love the story and style. Great stuff.

Fables #139 ($2.99) – The end is coming, but for now, I’ll just enjoy it for as long as I have it.

The Wake #7 ($2.99) – While this book was a struggle for me at first, the first issue of the Leeward half was a gorgeous, inviting peek into a rather dark version of the future. I want more.

Total: $16.46 – going to Emerald City ComiCon this week, gotta save some $$$

Matthew’s Picks

Silver Surfer #1 ($3.99) – I am really very excited for Dan Slott’s Doctor Who on a surfboard. That Mike Allred is drawing it makes it all the better, I think.

All-New Ghost Rider #1 ($3.99) – Tradd Moore drawing a book where people drive fast cars and kick ass? You had me at “Tradd Moore.”

Sandman Overture #2 ($3.99) – Remember when this was supposed to have a regular release schedule? Ha! Yeah. Jokes are fun. But the first issue was still great, so.

Skullkickers #25 ($3.50) – Get your grog on, ladies and germs. The kickers of skulls are back!

Hawkeye #18 ($2.99) – The more Hawkeye, the merrier.

Total:
$18.46

Brian’s Picks:

Manhattan Projects #19 ($3.50) – I don’t know what issue #20 has in store, but #19 closes off the entire series thus far quite nicely, with superb artwork by Ryan Browne all the way. A must-read for fans of the series.

Silver Surfer #1 ($3.99) – Mike Allred on the Silver Surfer is one of the greatest comic ideas of the last decade. Add Dan Slott to the mix, and you’ve got a must-buy book.

All-New Ghost Rider #1 ($3.99) – Our pal Tradd Moore is getting the raves he’s deserved his whole career for his work on this series. This is exactly what the property needed: a striking new take. Plus, that car!

Blackout #1 / Captain Midnight #9 ($2.99 each) – Dark Horse’s superheroes line might be the most underrated part of their game. Get on the ground floor of “Blackout” now, and continue to pick up the flagship book, “Captain Midnight.”

Total: $17.46
