Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Vince’s Picks:

Moon Knight #1 ($3.99) – Everyone says they’re a Moon Knight fan, but his books keep getting canceled. I buy Moon Knight whenever he’s got a book out. Let’s hope this one sticks, because I think it’s going to be a tremendous comic. With Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey on board? The odds are in its favor.

She-Hulk #2 ($2.99) – Really enjoyed the first issue. Pulido’s art makes for a satisfying thematic link from one lawyerin’ book (“Daredevil”) to another.

Secret #6 ($3.50) – Someone remind me to put Ryan Boddenheim on my year-end “Best Artist” list, because I will forget.

The Saviors #3 ($2.99) – This funky little book might be my favorite art that J. Bone and ever done, and one of the breeziest things Robinson’s done. Great collaboration.

Action Comics #29 ($3.99) – The Superman book that I always knew that I wanted.

Total: $17.46

Mark Tweedale’s Picks:

Veil #1 ($3.50) – I’ll definitely be spending more than $20 this week, but if I couldn’t, this one would still make the cut. It’s an intriguing beginning, and where it goes next is gonna be the real fun. Not to mention Toni Fejzula was the perfect choice of artist for this book.

Avatar: The Last Airbender ― The Rift (Part 1) ($10.99) – It’s Avatar. Need I say more? If I do, just read my review. Then buy this.

Lobster Johnson: Get the Lobster #2 ($3.99) – Tonči Zonjić and John Arcudi are fantastic together. The involvement of either one is an automatic must-pick-up for me. Plus, you know, Lobster Johnson’s in this thing too.

Total: $18.48

David Harper’s Picks:

Moon Knight #1 ($3.99) – Warren Ellis. Declan Shalvey. Jordie Bellaire. Do you really need to say anything else?

Starlight #1 ($2.99) – Truthfully speaking, I’ve already read this comic from Mark Millar and Goran Parlov, and it is completely wonderful. Even if you’re not into Millar’s work, this should not be missed.

Wolverine and the X-Men #1 ($3.99) – Iceman is back with a brand new edition! Jason Latour and Mahmud Asrar take over the Jean Grey School, and I couldn’t be more excited!

Saviors #3 ($2.99) – LOVE this book. Two issues in, and I am all in on James Robinson and J. Bone’s latest.

She-Hulk #2 ($2.99) – The first issue of this new Shulkie series from Charles Soule and Javier Pulido was a complete delight. You should be buying this.

Quantum & Woody: Goat #0 ($3.99) – This issue establishes the single biggest difference between the first series and this one, while telling maybe Valiant’s greatest story ever. Umm. You should buy it.

Total: $20.94 – Find 94 cents, ya cheap skate!

Brian’s Picks:

Lobster Johnson: Get The Lobster #2 ($3.50) – Pulp comics have gone from an under-utilized genre to the hot stunt publishers are using ad nauseam. The exception to that is our pal LoJo – his stories never feel gimmicky, or half-baked. Mignola, Arcudi and Zonjic have really nailed what makes a pulp book great, and this deserves a spot in your pull.

Action Comics #29 ($3.99) – The Pak/Kuder run is such a breath of fresh air. This is my main argument to people that DC is still doing (a little) great stuff.

The Saviors #3 ($2.99) – This is a weird book. A gloriously drawn, brilliantly plotted, tension filled weird book.

Secret #6 ($3.50) – Yes, it is frustrating how late this book has been, but we’re on a good streak now, and that art. Good God y’all.

Moon Knight #1 ($3.99) – Do I really need to sell you on this?

Total: $17.97

David Henderson’s Picks:

Veil #1 ($3.50) – It’s a new Greg Rucka written comic. What do you want from me?

Moon Knight #1 ($3.99) – Warren Ellis reinventing who I think is Marvel’s most underrated street-level hero? Declan Shalvey and Jordie Bellaire putting in what looks to be some of the best artwork I’ve ever seen from them? Moon Knight in a suit? Yeah, I’m in.

Magneto #1 ($3.99) – I really don’t know why I’m looking forward to this book so much? Much of Cullen Bunn’s Marvel work that I’ve read has left me cold and if you’d have asked me even last week if I thought a Magneto ongoing was a thing we needed I’d have said no. But… that preview though. Dude impaled a guy through the face.

The Punisher #3 ($3.99) – Yeah, I am all in on this book. It may not have any closure on Rucka’s run and I’m still frustrated by that, but Edmondson and Gerads are doing good work already.

She-Hulk #2 ($2.99) – God, that first issue was really good. I hope this gets even better.

Total: $18.46

Matt’s Picks:

Trillium #7 ($2.99) – The penultimate issue of Jeff Lemire’s latest can-do-no-wrong book from Vertigo. I’m anxious to see what happens before it ends.

Starlight #1 ($2.99) – I think people are going to be surprised as to how good this book is. I blame Goran Parlov, though.

Drumhellar #5 ($3.50) – Riley Rossmo is one of my favorite artists (and fans of our Hellboy Month will see a good example of why later today), and I’d be remiss if I didn’t pick up the latest issue of his series. “Drumhellar” is a consistently underrated and highly entertaining little book, and I can’t wait to see where it goes next.

Loki, Agent of Asgard #2 ($2.99) – I like this comic! Another! *smashes glass on the ground*

Evil Empire #1 ($3.99) – Max Bemis’ new ongoing at BOOM! Studios? After the strength of “Polarity” and the amount of hits BOOM! has been churning out lately, I am all over this one.

Quantum and Woody: The Goat #0 ($3.99) – Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. (Translation: Sorry, Moon Knight.)

Total: 20.45 – It’s worth it for the Goat.
