Comics Should Be Cheap! (4/4/2018)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s picks:

“Isola” #1 ($3.99)— I’ve been excited about this book for a very long time and that can often lead to expectations a book can’t reasonably meet. Not in this case though. Wow, Brenden Fletcher and Karl Kerschl really delivered! This book is so very much my jam.

“Doctor Star” #2 ($3.99)— It’s bizarre to think that this time last year we had eight issues of “Black Hammer.” Since then the universe has expanded massively with “Sherlock Frankenstein,” “Doctor Star,” “The Quantum Age” coming in July, and I’m pretty sure there’s a Justice Squadron series on the way too. Normally my reaction to something like this would be “too much too soon,” but so far Jeff Lemire’s been such a steady hand at the wheel, instead I find myself giddy with excitement wondering what’s next.

“Koshchei the Deathless” #4 ($3.99)— This series is so damn good, especially its sense of humor. Mignola and Stenbeck make for a hell of a team.

“Sex Criminals” #23 ($3.99)— I’d tell you about this comic, but unfortunately it’s too rude. You’ll just have to read it instead.

“Giant Days” #37 ($3.99)— My favorite comic from John Allison. Strip Panel Naked talked about it recently, and Hassan pretty accurately laid out why every single page is pure gold. Max Sarin’s work shines in “Giant Days,” getting better all the time.

Total: $19.95.

Matt Lune’s Picks:

“Analog” #1 ($3.99)— The latest series from Gerry Duggan explores a near-future world where the security of the internet has been corrupted, and sensitive data reverts to analog means of transfer between various parties, entrusted to armed couriers. With the safety of our personal information occupying the news frequently at the moment, this seems particularly timely.

“Sonic The Hedgehog” #1 ($3.99)— I’ve been a fan of “Sonic the Hedgehog” comics ever since I was a kid, reading the UK “Sonic the Comic,” produced by a number of “2000 AD” alums. I could never truly breach the high continuity walls that surrounded the majority of the Archie comics run, so I’m excited that the universe is essentially rebooting over at IDW under the same writer.

“Isola” #1 ($3.99)— I’ve a feeling this latest high fantasy series from Brenden Fletcher and Karl Kerschl will be a big release for Image comics. Aside from the fantastic creative team, I’ve heard nothing but positive buzz about it for months now, and beside all that it looks like it could be a great new epic story to sink your teeth into.

“WWE Wrestlemania 2018 Special” #1 ($7.99)— Wrestling is never really something I’ve been into until recently, but since diving into the WWE network and chatting with Boom Studios writer Lan Pitts about his contribution to this issue, I’ve become something of a convert, so I’m eager to see what this special has to offer.

Total: $19.96 – Lot of good comics out this week, including “Scarlett Hart Monster Hunter” from First Second, a new “Thanos” graphic novel from Jim Starlin and Alan Davis, and the complete “Jughead’s Time Police” from Archie which, if you’ve never experienced it before, is exactly as bonkers as it sounds.

Kate’s Picks:

“Sex Criminals” #23 ($3.99)— This series even in its dry spells remains entertaining (pun intended), which is a testament to Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky’s talent and ability to make even the most mundane refreshing. Plus, the NSFW covers are always a hoot.

“Tinseltown” #1 ($1.50)— For the comic fan on a budget, you can’t beat Alterna Comics’ price point. I’m also a big fan of period pieces, and this early Hollywood era story of the first female police officer reads like a Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries prequel.

Continued below

“Rugrats: R is for Reptar” 2018 Special ($7.99)— What I save in reading Alterna I can put towards my favorite (cartoon) babies. Their hero-worship of Godzilla-knockoff Reptar always has me laughing.

“Demi-God” #1 ($3.99)— I’m a big fan of Deadpool and Gwenpool, specifically when they break the fourth wall and give the readers the wink and nudge that we know is coming. Now that Gwenpool has ended (sniff sniff) Demi-God looks to carry on her torch.

Total: $17.47.
