Comics Should Be Cheap! (4/13/2011)

Whew. What a week. There is a massive amount of good comics coming out this week (that is, comics that look like they might be good). Still, we know that you only have room in your pocket for so many – trust me, as a college student I sympathize completely – and so we’ve picked out what comics we think will present the best bang for your buck. Follow the cut to see what comics the Multiversity staff members recommend this week.

Walt’s Picks:

Infinite Vacation #2 ($3.50) – I have read this already, and let me tell you something: you want it. You might not know it yet, but you do. If you liked the first issue, you’ll love this one even more. If you didn’t like the first issue that much, then 1) I don’t believe you, and 2) you will still probably like this. There’s a reason that Spencer has become such a big name, and this mini is only two issues in and still manages to display why. Delays be damned, I’d wait a year for the next issue of Infinite Vacation.

S.H.I.E.L.D. Infinity ($4.99) – I am honestly not sure if this issue is a part of Jonathan Hickman’s ongoing story, or supplemental material that fleshes out what he has been doing on this new title. Even so, I’ve been enjoying Hickman’s history of the Marvel Universe so much that I don’t care which one of those this issue is: I’m still going to read it.

Secret Warriors #26 ($2.99)Two issue streak! This was originally supposed to be the final issue of Secret Warriors. Then Hickman promised one more issue. Now, it looks like the title is going to reach #28, at least. It’s the title that will never end – and I’m fine with that.

Butcher Baker: The Righteous Maker #2 ($2.99)Two issue streak! The first issue of Image’s irreverent take on the superhero genre was a smashing success, meeting and exceeding the wildness that comics fans were expecting from it. Most surprising to some, though, was that this title turned out to be more of a satire than a parody – and one that is just as interesting as it is entertaining. While there wasn’t much of a hook at the end of the first issue to encourage the reader to check out the next issue, the great writing and excellent art were more than enough to get me onboard.

The Flash #10 ($2.99) – So maybe Geoff Johns has let us down a bit. Even so, I am quite interested in the alternate reality that the upcoming Flashpoint promises. Maybe I’m just a sucker for these sort of “what if?” stories – not to be confused with What If?, of course – especially when taken to such a massive scale. Johns can be good. Hell, Johns can be great. While his recent work as a whole may have shaken my faith in him a bit, his run on The Flash so far has been within that good to great scale, and I’m willing to give him another shot.

Total: $17.46

Matthew is in Las Vegas this week gambling his life savings away, but he did remember to leave a few notes before leaving. First, he says that if you don’t buy SHIELD Infinity and Secret Warriors #26 this week, you probably hate comics. Additionally, Ultimate Spider-Man #157 is looking pretty good, as well as X-Men Legacy #247. You should also check out Captain America – The Fight Avenger, which was SUPPOSED to be Brian Clevinger’s new Captain America ongoing which was reduced to a one-shot (sadness). If you’re not in a Mighty Marvel mood, there’s also a new Hellboy One-Shot, Butcher Baker #2, and the latest Li’l Depressed Boy.
