Comics Should Be Cheap! (4/2/2014)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Vince’s Picks:

Moon Knight #2 ($3.99) – The first issue didn’t truly grab me until the final few pages, but if I had to place a bet on which All-New Marvel Now! comic book is going to feel most satisfying by the end of its run, I’d pick “Moon Knight.” Let’s get weird.

She-Hulk #3 ($2.99) – “She-Hulk” wouldn’t be far behind though. The first 2 issues of this series have been clever to the max.

Action Comics #30 ($3.99) – I’ve said it a billion times already, but Pak & Kuder are saving Superman from the Zack Snyder’s of the world (see what I did there?) who want to turn him into some brooding, laser-shooting asshole. Their Superman is funny, charming, and above all else, brings positive vibes along with him. The dude abides.

Detective Comics #30 ($3.99) – I’m hoping the tone-revolution I described above continues with “Detective Comics” – a series that seems tonally set to live outside of what’s going on in “Batman Eternal.” Not that I ever had a problem with the tone of Manapul & Buccellato’s “The Flash” – I just found it to be a little boring as they got deeper into it. As long as Manapul was drawing it, though, it was a gorgeous, boundary-pushing title.

Lobster Johnson: Get the Lobster #3 ($3.99) – Everybody knows Lobster Johnson is my homeboy.

Total: $18.95

Matt’s Picks:

Dead Letters #1 ($3.99) – The Two Chris of Dead Letters have put together something that is very fun, smart and stylish for a heck of a debut issue. I wouldn’t miss this one.

Trillium #8 ($2.99) – One of my absolute favorite minis in a long time, but then again anything Jeff Lemire writes/draws is something I am bound to love. I for one can not wait to see how it all comes to an end.

The Field ($3.50) – It is tough to describe this book without giving anything away, so I’ll just say this: it’s Ed Brisson and Simon Roy, together again, and it’s well worth checking out.

Pretty Deadly ($3.50) – It’s been a bit of a wait for the finale to the first arc, but it has been well worth the wait, I’ll say this. Fans of this series will be very pleased, and I may even go so far as to say that some of the books initial doubters might find it worth checking out again.

Starlight #2 ($2.99) – I’m as surprised as you are at how good this book was, honestly.

Red Sonja #8 ($3.99) – I feel like it has been a while since we’ve seen this book, but it is a book that is very much worth the wait. You have to love Gail Simone letting loose and just writing the heck out of a bad ass character like Sonja.

Total: $20.96

Zach’s Picks

Starlight #2 ($2.99) – “Starlight” #1 was one my favorite things Mark Millar has done in years. It was sad, powerful, fun, beautiful and oh so much good. I can’t wait to see what he and Goran Parlov have up their sleeves in the second issue.

Black Science #5 ($3.50) – Another stellar sci-fi offering from Image this week, Rick Remender and Mattero Scalera continue this gem of a book. I’m sure it’ll be great, but I sure do miss those future cyber Native Americans.

Pretty Deadly #5 ($3.50) – Kelly Sue DeConnick and Emma Rios wrap up the first arc of their bewitching supernatural western that I have absolutely adored.

Continued below

Earth 2 #22 ($2.99) – Alan Scott returns! Green Lantern, guardian of Earth vs. Superman, slave of Darkseid, Round 2, FIGHT! (For reals, I’ve missed this guy. This is the first time Tom Taylor will be tackling the character, so it’ll be interesting to see how his interpretation compares to James Robinson’s.)

Inhuman #1 ($3.99) – It’s a bit of a bummer that this book has suffered such a delay, and that Matt Fraction is no longer writing it. Of course, it’s incredibly hard to complain when you have someone as talented as Charles Soule at the helm. I just hope that the editorial hand that guided Fraction out doesn’t muddle Soule’s voice as a writer. If nothing else, there’s plenty of pretty Joe Madureira art to look forward too.

She-Hulk #3 ($2.99) – If you’re unfamiliar with Charles Soule and are unsure if he has the necessary writing chops to handle a flagship Marvel title such as “Inhuman,” let me turn your attention to this beauty of comic. With incredible wit, fun characters, and stunning Javier Pulido art, you just can’t go wrong.

Total: $19.96 – Who says you can’t get a good bang for your comics buck?

David Harper’s Picks:

Starlight #2 ($2.99) – The only greater secret than my love of Mark Millar is the overall greatness of artist Goran Parlov. #1 was an understated sensation. Really excited for what’s next.

She-Hulk #3 ($2.99) – This is maybe the best book of All-New Marvel Now! May it have a lasting success and find a big audience.

Lobster Johnson: Get the Lobster #3 ($3.50) – Tonci. Zonjic. Tonci. Zonjic. TONCI. ZONJIC. TONCI ZONJIC! One of the best artist in comics does Tonci Zonjic things.

Revival #19 ($2.99) – Norton and Seeley continue their story in assumably very excellent fashion.

Moon Knight #2 ($3.99) – Come for the Ellis one and dones, stay for the Shalvey and Bellaire art.

Self-Obsessed ($3.99) – Sina Grace explaining Sina Grace, and who is better out there to do just that?

Total: $20.45 – 45 cents is nothing! Carry over from last week!

Drew’s Picks:

Trillium #8 ($2.99) – Lemire has knocked every issue out of the park so far. I have no doubt this mini will stick the landing.

Bleach vol. 60 ($10.99) – I’ve been reading this series for so long, it’s hard to believe it’s in the home stretch. Granted, that “home stretch” may last another year or two, but hey.

Total: $13.98 – the beginning of the month is always light.
