Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles. That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Follow the cut to see everyone’s picks for the week.

Walt’s Picks:

FF #4 ($2.99)Four issue streak! Did you read FF #3? No, you didn’t? You’re crazy. Yes, you did? Wasn’t that crazy? We’re only four issues into this relaunch, and I’m already more excited about this arc than I was for anything when it was still Fantastic Four. That is saying a lot. In Hickman I trust, but I’m also highly pleased with Steve Epting’s work so far. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a brilliant artist, but I didn’t think he would be a good fit for this series at first. Turns out I was wrong. It happens.

Detective Comics #877 ($2.99)Four issue streak! I have a confession… I like Snyder’s Detective more than I liked Rucka’s recent run. And I loved Rucka’s run. Snyder is the perfect fit for this book, and knows exactly how to balance the gritty with the supernatural. Add on brilliant art by alternating artists Jock and Francesco Francavilla, and you have a classic in the making. If you’re a Batman fan and haven’t been buying this, you’re a fool. If you haven’t at least been reading a friend’s copy, you’re a madman.

American Vampire #15 ($2.99) – Nazis and vampires. What more needs to be said? I’ve finally caught up with American Vampire, and I can’t believe that I let myself fall behind in the first place. Blasted college, who needs it? This series seems to be able to cover every single spot of the spectrum of horror, and in an excellent manner. Support non-sparkly vampires! Read this book!

Secret Warriors #27 (#2.99)Three issue streak! Man, I don’t even know when this series is ending anymore. The final page of issue #26 was brilliant, and it’s going to be hella fun to see everything tie up in that nice, Jonathan Hickman way. If you haven’t been reading Secret Warriors, you don’t know what you’ve been missing. As we head into the home stretch, there’s really nothing more to be said.

Venom #3 ($3.99)Three issue streak! Rick Remender, you so crazy. Between this and Uncanny X-Force, Remender has been giving us two of the most intense new titles Marvel has to offer. X-Force has been killing it (and by it I mean children), to be sure, but his relaunch of Venom may end up being the most inventive thing to ever be done to the character… and I’m saying that only three issues in! If you haven’t picked this up, you better pray your shop has the first two issues in stock.

Skullkickers #7 ($2.99) – I don’t even know what this next story is about. I don’t care. There is no book on the shelves that is as fun as Skullkickers. On that, I can assure you. I’ve read plenty of funny comics, but this is one of the few that has me consistently laughing out loud. Plus, there’s no reason you can’t jump in at this issue. Buy it. Buy it. Buy it.

Total: $18.94

Matt’s Picks:

Secret Warriors #27 ($2.99) – The penultimate issue! Twists! Turns! Nick Fury! Baron von Strucker! Shock and awe, as only Hickman can tell it! Get! A thousand times, get!

Venom #3 ($2.99) – Symbiotes! Violence! Broken jaws! Spider-Man! Vibranium! Mischievous mayhem, as only Remender can tell it! Get!

Continued below

FF #4 ($2.99) – The Council of Doom! Uatu! The War! Evil Reeds! High flying science fiction action, as only Hickman can tell it! Get!

Detective Comics #877 ($2.99) – Batman! Mystery! Murder! Dead women inside dead whales! Jock! The best Batman comic on the market not written by Grant Morrison, as only Snyder can tell it! Get!

X-Men Legacy #249 ($2.99) – Drama! Space! Memories! Magneto crying! Issues addressed! Fallout wrapping up! Adult oriented mutant drama, as only Carey can tell it! Get!

The Mighty Thor #2 ($3.99) – Thor! Galactus! Silver Surfer! Arguing! Grumpy characters! Thrown hammers! Beautiful Olivier Coipel artwork! The continuation of Matt Fraction’s run on Thor, as only Fraction can tell it! Get!

Total: $18.94

Brandon’s Picks:

Wolverine #9 ($3.99) — Jason Aaron, Wolverine and Mystique, I know where this is going and I like the looks of it. Anyone who has kept up with Aaron’s work with Wolverine knows that Wolvie and Mystique and their dealings are a running plotline. I’m interested to see what this round of interactions brings our way.

X-Men: Legacy #249 ($2.99) — I love me some Mike Carey X-Men. In my opinion he has been the best X-Men writer to come along in some time. I am stoked that he is taking the title back to being a team title. The last time he did this we got an incredible run. The cast of this book is also rather unique which is almost an oxymoron when it comes to X-Titles.

Green Lantern #66 ($2.99), Green Lantern Corps ($2.99) and Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #10 ($2.99) — I have been enjoying this crossover and the fact that all three titles hit in one day is nice because I think this joint reads better in chunks. I know some will complain that they all hit at once but I welcome it.

Detective Comics #877 ($2.99) — Last issue had mystery, action and a dead chick falling out of a dead whale. Yep, you heard that right. Buy this business!

Total: $18.94
