Comics Should Be Cheap! (5/27/2015)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

Pisces #2 ($3.99) – Kurtis Wiebe and Johnny Christmas made a hell of a first issue, and I know that I’m definitely going to be there for the rest of this series.

Chew #49 ($2.99) – We’re getting ever closer to the end of “Chew”, guys. Layman and Guillory are sure to turn up the weird and the sadness as we get towards the finale.

Deadly Class #13 ($3.50) – If you’re not reading “Deadly Class”, then you’re missing out on one of the most consistently quality comics of the past couple years. Seriously one that everyone should be reading.

Sons of the Devil #1 ($2.99) – I know basically nothing about this book, but the solicit says it’s like “True Detective meets Orphan Black meets Helter Skelter“, so that’s all I really need to know to be willing to give it a shot.

Total: 13.47

Keith’s Picks:

Convergence: Shazam! #2 ($3.99) – I wouldn’t mind the team of Jeff Parker and Doc Shaner doing an ongoing title featuring the Marvel Family if Geoff Johns and Gary Frank aren’t able to tackle the job. The first part of this miniseries was gorgeous and pure fun. I expect nothing less from their conclusion to an all-too-short mini. And, as an added treat, we get an appearance from the Batman of “Gotham by Gaslight”!

Sabrina #3 ($3.99) – This spookily stunning series took an extremely long break between issue one and two, yet three is right on schedule. Roberto Aguirre-Sacassa and Robert Hack have already built a world that feels very much alive after only two magical chapters featuring a teenage witch.

Sex #21 ($2.99) – This has become a perennial favorite of mine and deserves more readers. Go out and buy “Sex”! I guarantee it will thoroughly satisfy you in every way.

Outcast #9 ($2.99) – If “The Walking Dead” is as good as this, then I need to get on that bandwagon.

PastAways #3 ($3.99) – I’m enjoying this band of time travelers and can’t wait to see what mind- bending twists and turns the great Matt Kindt is going to throw at us. With “Mind MGMT” coming to a close, at least we shall have more Kindt.

Total: $17.95

Vince’s Picks:

Providence #1 ($3.99) – Alan Moore’s Lovecraft obsession keeps on truckin’ with “Providence”, and I couldn’t be more excited about it. I’m one of those people that thinks that everything Moore does is basically gold – with the possible exception of the off-puttingly porny stuff, for which I can even still appreciate some of the intent behind. I read an interview with Moore about “Providence” a long time ago, and was fascinated by his approach to research and writing what sounds like a sprawling epic. You can debate the level of Moore’s recent relevance, but I don’t think there’s any debating that his stuff is always worth a first glance.

Material #1 ($3.50) – Speaking of creators that are always worth a blind buy – Ales Kot, ladies and gentlemen.

Sex #21 ($2.99) – The “next phase” begins here. Whatever that means. “Sex” has been worth reading from the very first issue, and any issue is a fine jumping on point. It’s patient, heavily-thematic storytelling the likes of which you almost never get in comics, while also having at least one nudity-filled sex scene per issue. Never fails to fascinate me.

Sabrina #3 ($3.99) – This series may be coming out at a snail’s pace, but slow an steady wins the race. When it’s all said and done, this will be one of the most exciting and quality stories that Archie has ever put out.

Total: $14.46

Brian’s Picks:

X-Men ’92 Infinite Comic #1 ($1.99) – It is a treat to be able to buy stuff created by your friends, and Chad Bowers, co-writer of this book, is one of the best guys I know, in or out of comics. Plus, he is tackling my absolute favorite X-period – how could I resist?

Sabrina #3 ($3.99) – The even creepier cousin to “Afterlife with Archie” is finally on a regular schedule – enjoy it!

Fight Club 2 #1 ($3.99) – I’m curious, even if I don’t have very high expectations.

Convergence #8 ($3.99) – I hope they find a way to stick the ending on this event that has been rather spotty thus far.

King: Flash Gordon #4 ($3.99) – While it is no Parker/Shaner “Flash Gordon,” it has still been pretty great. Here’s to hoping that Dynamite keeps working with the King characters going forward.

Convergence: Shazam #2 ($3.99) – This is no Parker/Shaner “Flash Gordon” either – it is even better! Ahhhhh!

Total: $21. 94 (I’ve consistently gone under in prior weeks – hope you were saving the change for today!)
