Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kate’s Picks:

Dial H for Hero #4 ($3.99) – I am so glad this series (along with “Wonder Twins”) has a 12 issue order. It’s just pure fun, and sometimes, that’s all you need from your comics, right?

Marilyn Manor #1 ($3.99) – I love the 80s, and I do love Magdalene Visaggio, and when you describe your series as “an apocalypse directed by John Hughes” this 80s girl child who watched way too many of those 80s nuclear war end of days movies is a happy 80s girl child.

Magnificent Ms. Marvel #4 ($3.99) – Kamala Khan dabbled in romance in her previous run, and it was an aspect that didn’t work for me only because it felt shoehorned in with so much else taking place in her young life. Maybe now it gets the teenage romance treatment it deserves – – and just in time for summer too! Who doesn’t love a good summer romance?

Stranger Things Six #2 ($3.99) – With the third season of Stranger Things dropping next week, this series will keep your attention until July 3rd.

Total: $15.96

Kyle’s Picks:

Head Lopper #12 ($5.99) – Let’s just get this pick out of the way. I really don’t have to convince people to buy this book right? It’s Andrew MacLean doing work. The best work. This issue finished out Volume 3 which means new TPB soon and means that is 3 TPBs out now. Can we get an over-sized hardcover edition now? Can we?

Weatherman Vol 2 #1 ($3.99) – Jody LeHeup and Nathan Fox gave us one of the stand out books of 2018. A really great concept that presented great moral dilemmas but also a lot of insane action. I am excited for the return of the series and the promise of Nathan Fox and colorist Moreno Dinisio drawing a world of monsters.

Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers #40 ($3.99) If you told me a few years ago I was going to be anticipating the return of a MMPR comic 40 issues in with a new creative team following up an insane story like “Shattered Grid” I would say to you that sounds like a mouthful and surely a run on sentence. This issue debuts a new creative team of writer Ryan Parrott and artist Daniele Di Nicuolo with a new story arc, “Necessary Evil”, with a foil variant cover. Well, all right.

Head Lopper #12 Cover B ($5.99) – Matthew Allison of “Cankor” is doing the B cover this issue? Can I recommend a book twice, Leo?

Total: $ 19.96

Kevin’s Picks:

Marilyn Manor #1 ($3.99) – Ever since this book was announced it has sounded like something that would be extremely my thing. Psychedelic historical fiction set in the White House written by one of the best writers of our moment and drawn by the best Young Animal artist. The way Mags Visaggio has talked about this book on Twitter saying edition Shelly Bond is drawing the best out of her has certainly added to the hype, and seeing Marley Zarcone’s pages have been a delight. Bring on the madness.

Teen Titans: Raven ($16.99) – I haven’t picked up any of the DC Ink or Zoom books yet, but with the announcement that the company is doubling down on these books, mixed with the fact that Gabriel Picolo is drawing this thing *heart eyes emjoi* means this will be the first. They’ve already greenlit a sequel, and Kami Garcia is getting a Black Label book to boot, so they must have a lot of faith in this thing. Plus, Raven is a great and tragically underutilized character. This is gonna be a good week.

Total: $20.98. I’m a dollar over, but it’s a big week, and I could’ve spent more. “War of the Realms” wraps too!

Matt Lune’s Picks:

Marilyn Manor #1 ($3.99) – A new Mags Visaggio book is always cause for celebration, and this new mini-series with artist Marley Zarcone is all about the cost of seeking the validation of fame. There’s also a girl possessed by the spirit of Abraham Lincoln so, you know, it’s going to get weird.

Usagi Yojimbo vol. 33 ($17.99) – There’s never a bad time to be a fan of Stan Sakai’s epic samurai masterpiece, but with IDW recently releasing a brand new number one, and now this final Dark Horse volume hitting shelves, if you love the adventures of Miyamoto Usagi and friends, then you’re truly spoilt.

Total: $21.98

Vince’s Picks:

Wonder Woman #73 ($3.99) – G. Willow Wilson’s “Wonder Woman” run has been quietly one of the best books DC is publishing right now and the best interpretation of the character since before ‘Rebirth’ began (Steve Orlando’s all-too-short run notwithstanding). She simply understands all facets of who Diana is an what makes her both an Amazonian wonder and a “human being.” It’s a remarkable run about empathy and the responsibility of being a hero and I hope people are paying attention to it.

Total: $3.99
