Comics Should Be Cheap! (6/3/20)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Brian’s Picks:

Shazam #12 ($3.99) – With my ‘Chronicles of Shazam’ starting up again next week, it’s nice to check in with Billy Batson and co. This series has been a lot of fun, but delayed so often that it’s easy to forget just how fun. Also, they shuffled around the release order, so this is a Jeff Loveness-penned issue, instead of the next chapter of Geoff Johns’s story. This isn’t really good or bad, just a little frustrating.

Nailbiter Returns #1 ($3.99) – The creator-owned book that took Joshua Williamson to the next level returns. Mike Henderson’s art fits this story like a glove, and I’m thrilled that the series is returning for another round.

Far Sector #6 ($3.99) – The Green Lantern books have been a bit stagnant since Geoff Johns departed the titles 7 years ago. While Grant Morrison’s “The Green Lantern” has been fun, it doesn’t feel as urgent and new as “Far Sector” has felt. N.K. Jemisin and Jamal Campbell are doing such incredible work here, I hope they get to do as much of this title as they want, even beyond the solicited 12 issues.

Kate’s Picks:

The Boys: Dear Becky #1 ($3.99) – I was surprised at how much I liked The Boys TV series, and I can’t wait to find out more about Becky Butcher and her secret past.

Life is Strange Vol 3: Strings ($16.99) – The second volume of this series comes back in October, so now is a good time to spend your summer with Max and Chloe catching up on their adventures before they head off on a road trip that could solve Max’s mysteries.

Total: $20.98. A light week, but still over budget.

Johnny’s Picks:

Far Sector #6 ($3.99) – I really love what writer N.K. Jemisin and artist Jamal Campbell are adding to the Lantern mythos in this book. A tried and true gumshoe story in a vibrant, far-off planetary system that feels wonderfully rich and fleshed out, even in just a few issues. Far Sector, for now, is only just a 12 issue mini-series, but I would follow Corpsman Jo Mullein’s story for a hell of a lot longer. With themes painfully relevant to current events, this book is a must read.

Copra #6 ($4.99) – There’s a special place in heaven for comic books with cool back matter. While I miss the feel of the paper stock from creator Michel Fiffe’s self-publishing days, I’m really glad to see this ridiculously good superhero book up on a larger stage. This book has been compared to many different titles, but I feel like it fits an era more than any specific title you could point to- it’s the 80’s un-self-conscious action Fiffe doles out in big scoops with Copra, and a joyously bizarre cast of characters.

Total: $8.98

Jason’s Picks:

Catwoman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular #1 ($9.99) – I wouldn’t say I’m a big Catwoman fan. However, I have read all of her series except the most recent one. That right there makes me sound like a fan of hers. I mean, I just enjoy characters that are written well, and it seems like she gets a lot of good creators. That’s why I’m interested in the “80th Anniversary.” The creator list is a real damn good one!

John Constantine: Hellblazer #6 ($3.99) – The last arc of “Hellblazer” was fantastic and one of my favorites of the year! Granted, the whole series has been amazing and I absolutely look forward to the series keeping that quality.

Total: $13.98.

Vince’s Picks:

Psychodrama Illustrated #1 ($4.99) – Never pass on the opportunity to pick up a new “Love & Rockets” entry. Need I say more?

Catwoman 80th Anniversary 100 Page Super Spectacular #1 ($9.99) – DC Comics has been knocking their anniversary issues out of the park, and the Catwoman one is no different. Every story seems plucked out of a different era, and while half of em won’t bowl you over by any means, they’re solid Catwoman one offs. The real selling point is getting to see some special artists do these stories and pinups. Plus, there’s an Ed Brubaker and Cameron Stewart segment that’s really the cat’s meow. Sorry.

Total: $14.98

Rowan’s Picks:

Far Sector #6 ($3.99) – I’m jumping into this series with this issue first! Over the pause of weekly comics, I read N.K. Jemisin’s The Fifth Season and absolutely loved it, so I’m excited to see what she’s doing in this corner of the Green Lantern mythos.

Sabrina The Teenage Witch: Something Wicked #1 ($3.99) – I was super into Kelly Thompson and Veronica Fish’s last foray with this character, so picking up this continuation is absolutely a no brainer. The team balances the best of classic Sabrina with the tone of the Netflix series really nicely, making this an easy recommendation.

Total: $7.98 – A light week this time, so time to catch up on that old backlog.

Christopher Chiu-Tabet’s Pick:

“We’ll Soon Be Home Again” ($14.99) – I’m stunned that Dark Horse’s anthology, based on memories of children who survived the Holocaust, hasn’t already been published because of the shutdown, but better late than never: as the gulf between us and the war grows more vast, it’s more important than ever to listen to those who remember what happened when people mistook scapegoating for competence, and brutality for strength. There are admittedly some other more fun looking books this week (hello Selina), but escapism feels like a guilty pleasure right now.

Total: $14.99
