Comics Should Be Cheap! (6/18/2014)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Vince’s Picks:

Witchfinder: The Mysteries of Unland #1 ($3.50) – I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for a new Witchfinder story. I feel like it’s been forever since the last one; or am I wrong? Anyway, I buy anything and everything remotely Mignola-related, and fresh Witchfinder sounds really good to me right now.

Wonder Woman #32 ($2.99) – When I like it, I don’t hide it. Got to have it. I can’t help it – it’s automatic.

Alex + Ada #7 ($2.99) – At least one hundred feels per issue for the low, low price of #2.99

The Wicked + The Divine #1 ($3.50) – Gillen. McKelvie. This book could be about something as ridiculous as teen angel celebrities and I’d still buy it. Wait, what?

Silver Surfer #3 ($3.99) – It appears that the new “Silver Surfer” book was specially formulated in a top secret lab to contain all of the stuff that I would want in a cosmic Marvel comic. Thanks, science.

Total: $16.97

Brian’s Picks:

B.P.R.D. #120 ($3.50) – After the epic “Reign of the Black Flame,” we are getting a smaller, more team-focused arc, with art from the amazing Laurence Campbell. This issue has many of the “core” characters in one place, something we’re not too used to seeing nowadays.

Manhattan Projects #21 ($3.50) – The second major piece of the story starts here, with a detour through space with Laika. Ryan Browne is back for more, and the issue even has a preview of “God Hates Astronauts” in it – a must buy!

Silver Surfer #3 ($3.99) – Allred working on “Silver Surfer” seems even more perfect after re-reading “Red Rocket 7” last week. He and Slott have the perfect balance of reverence for the character and intolerance for boring comics, making the book something really special.

New 52: Futures End #7/Batman Eternal #11 ($2.99 each) – I’ll admit it – I’m loving these weeklies, and I don’t care who knows it!

Total: $16.97

James’ Picks:

Daredevil #4 ($3.99) – Waid and Samnee’s Daredevil is firmly entrenched in my pull list and it’d take a lot to knock it out of there.

Iron Patriot #4 ($3.99) – If you have any kindness inside your heart you will do everything you can to support this book past issue five. That might be a lost cause now but miracles can still happen.

The Manhattan Projects #21 ($3.50) – Dogs + Russians + Space + Aliens = One of the wildest issues of “The Manhattan Projects” yet.

Sex Criminals #6 ($3.50) – Oh what? Like you were ever going to skip an issue of SexCrims?

The Wicked + The Divine #1 ($3.50) – As a fan of Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie, Kanye West, Florence + The Machine, music, millennials, long forgotten gods, David Bowie, and the often hazardous relationship between creators, fans, and the works that define them, there was no way that the debut issue of “The Wicked + The Divine” wouldn’t be my top choice. I’ve read the first issue and folks, you better believe the hype.

Total: $18.48

Matt’s Picks:

Adventure Time #29 ($3.99) – Jim Rugg’s final issue of “Adventure Time,” and like with most things Rugg-related, it’s not something to miss — especially considering how zany this book has been lately.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time #1 ($3.99) – Ross Campbell drawing the Ninja Turtles again! You had me at “Ross Campbell,” honestly. And Paul Allor has done quite a bit in the IDW Turtle-verse as well, and even though he tells me that this book has nothing to do with the classic arcade game, I’ll trust him. Just this once.

Drumhellar #6 ($3.50) – Riley Rossmo’s ongoing adventures in drugs and mysticism is back, and I have nothing but high hopes for the future of this series. The first volume was a lot of fun; it’d be a shame for you to miss out on the second.

Sex Criminals #6 ($3.50) – It’s back! And, having read it, I will say this: I will be very curious to see what the reaction is to this issue, because it is different. Not so different as you can’t recognize the fun, sexy comic that took the nation by storm, but… Well. You’ll see when you get it.

The Wicked + The Divine #1 ($3.50) – Honestly, the hype levels of this book are beyond maximum level. If anything, you’d be crazy not to get it. It’s Kieron and Jamie and Matt together again, with gods as pop stars after an incredibly run on “Young Avengers.” I think they sell themselves at this point, no?

Total: $18.48
