Comics Should Be Cheap! (6/22/2016)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

Black Road #3 ($3.99) – Vikings and Brian Wood are a winning combination in my book. Add some Gary Brown art to the mix and I’m all in for that. The first two issues aren’t the most grabbing thing Wood has ever written, but I think there’s a solid story in there. This may end up being something that’s more geared towards being read in trades, but I’ll be checking out the singles for now.

Colonus TPB ($9.99) – I, admittedly, don’t know a whole lot about this. At $10, this is a trade collecting some stuff that appeared in “Dark Horse Presents” and some additional material. $10, for me, is worth taking a gamble on a book that has a pretty cool sounding premise (humans have expanded to other planets, namely Mars and Venus, and now Mars is trying to take over Venus), even if I don’t know a whole lot about the creative team. Hopefully I’m not led astray!

Total: $13.98. I also really want to dig into the “Blood Feud” TPB, which is something I missed in singles and at $19.99 puts my way over the $20. Any book that is described as Southern horror and has some good old boys fighting monsters is good enough for me.

Matt Garcia’s Picks:

She Wolf #1 ($3.99) – Rich Tommaso tries his hand at a werewolf story in this eccentric and bizarre new comic. Seriously, Image has a lot of attention directed toward them: they ought to release more of these unique and expressive comics, and readers should really try moving out of their comfort zones.

Dept. H #3 ($3.99) – One of Matt Kindt’s most undervalued talents is his ability to make a book engaging and gripping in both its serialized form and its completed form. Not only that, but he generates two very different reading experiences out of the whole thing. Dude has control of the format.

Pretty Deadly #10 (3.50) – “Pretty Deadly,” on the other hand, reads best when you have a stack of them. With the conclusion of its second arc, you’ll have the opportunity to sit back and immerse yourself in this world. Be careful of getting too swept up, though.

Wonder Woman #1 ($2.99) – “Wonder Woman: Rebirth” was okay, and it at least treated Diana with far better respect and dignity than the run that closed off the New 52. Hopefully, it’ll be a nice placeholder until the next Renae De Liz series.

Total: $14.47

Keith’s Picks:

Detective Comics #935 ($2.99) – “Detective Comics” #934 was my favorite “Rebirth” issues. Writer James Tynion IV and artist Eddy Barrows are an impressive team. I love how this book differentiates itself from the other Bat-titles by having Batman and Batwoman team up to train some of my favorite characters. Having Tim Drake (Red Robin), Spoiler, Cassandra Cain, and Clayface (!) as the students, this title is sure to have many surprises in store for us.

Wonder Woman #1 ($2.99) – When it comes to anything written by Greg Rucka, you can usually expect the highest quality. The “Rebirth” issue of “Wonder Woman” was just a tease of where this book is heading. By exploring the present and delving into Diana’s “Year One”, Rucka and his artists Liam Sharpe and Nicola Scott will hopefully give Wonder Woman the stories she deserves.

Action Comics #958 ($2.99) – This was the biggest surprise of all the “Rebirth” titles. I haven’t been impressed with Dan Jurgens’ recent writing, yet “Action Comics” #957 was fast-paced, fun, and worthy of the book’s classic name.

Aquaman #1 ($2.99) – Writer Dan Abnett is a holdover from the previous “Aquaman” volume and, judging by the “Rebirth” issue, has some intriguing developments on the horizon for our favorite Atlantean ruler. I hope the Aqualad tease from “DC Universe: Rebirth” #1 is further fleshed out soon in this title.

Total: $11.96 – The first month of “Rebirth” has been free of stinkers so far. It’s nice to see the best creators on almost every character instead of just a few.

Vince’s Picks:

Space Dandy Vol 1 ($13.00) – One of my favorite [adult swim] guilty pleasure anime is coming out in an English manga release from Yen Press. It’s bonkers, so check it out!

Detective Comics #935 ($2.99) – The first issue of the newly re-re-numbered “Detective Comics” was too much of a table-setter for me, but I liked all the ingredients. Something tells me this one will be much more fun.

Wonder Woman #1 ($2.99) – Have you seen Liam Sharp’s art on this comic? My word. “Wonder Woman” has an embarrassment of creative riches right now.

Total: $19.98

Ken’s Picks:

Tokyo Ghoul vol. 7 ($8.99): So yeah. This is the big one. I’ve actively avoided spoilers for most of this series, but I do know what happens in this one and… yeah… poor Kaneki.

Detective Comics #935 ($2.99): ‘Tec #934 was probably the best opening of Rebirth if only because it felt like the only one that had a reason to exist unlike Batman and Flash: Rebirth and so on. This book is going to live or die on its character interactions of the team and I hope that takes precedent over the kind-of-not-really-interesting Colony enemy.

Total: $10.98
