Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kevin’s Picks:

Justice League #4 ($3.99) – Look this book is gorgeous, connected, huge, and so damn fun. This is a celebration of all the madness and world-building you can do at DC when you just get let loose with no leash. Scott Snyder and Jorge Jimenez are giving us the the JL epic of the ’10s. Get on the train.

Batman #51 ($3.99) – Was the wedding issue a little disappointing? Maybe. I’m trying not to think about it. I reread it with just the Mikel Janin pages and enjoyed it more. I’ve got a think piece going comparing Morrison, Snyder, and King’s “Batman,” trying to decide why this isn’t working for me like I want since Batman may be my favorite character in comicdom (as cliche as that is). Until then, the Tom King/Lee Weeks collaborations have produced some strong issues in the past year (really everything Lee Weeks has done the last 3 years at DC has been strong). I’m holding out hope that hope can be found now that King has truly shown us miserable Batman.

Euthanauts #1 (3.99) – I haven’t been following the Black Crown books at IDW as closely as I want to have been, but this one from it’s announcement has had me excited. I need more sci-fi, space, and death philosophical introspection in my life.

Runaways #11 ($3.99) – Since I binged the first 9 issues of this comic it has come to be one of my top 3 at Marvel and I am giddy every month when there is an issue in front of me. Kris Anka’s art is AMAZING and Rainbow Rowell just writes believable and enjoyable teen drama.

Tony Stark: Iron Man #2 ($3.99) – I had some thoughts about the first issue of this book on Make Mine Multiversity last month and thought it was a little shallow with too much set up. That being said, I love the direction. Happy and innovative Tony with Jocasta thrown in as his ethicist is just a great idea.

Total: $19.95

Kate’s Picks:

“Oh S#!t Its Kim & Kim” #1 ($3.99) – The Kims and their van are BACK, and I am over the moon. Magdalene Visaggio is a rising star in comics, and while I love pretty much anything she touches, I’m glad to have her come home to the bounty hunters I love so much.

“Ice Cream Man” #5 ($3.99) – I’ve loved the self-contained Twilight Zone anthology feel of this series, with cheery colors that hide the horror underneath like a band-aid that’s too big for the wound. It’s sinister storytelling covered with chocolate sprinkles. (And they’re sprinkles, not jimmies. Don’t @ me.)

“Call of the Suicide Forest” #5 ($3.99) – This horror series based on the legend of the Aokigahara Forest wraps up this week, and after the cliffhanger left on by the previous issue, I’m eager to see how it all ends.

“Fence” #8 ($3.99) – Seiji’s cool demeanor he wears as armor is starting to crack ever so slowly, and it’s fun to see play out, especially as C.S. Pacat has spread out the tension over several issues. Will this issue be the final straw that breaks Seiji?

“The Mall” #1 ($3.99) – I’m a Generation X girl born and raised in the land of the mall, New Jersey. No doubt I’m going to pick up an issue that I describe as “Mallrats meets the Mafia.”

Total: $19.95

Vince’s Picks:

Euthanauts #1 ($3.99) – Tini Howard’s next book is finally here and I’m pleased to say that it’s extremely good. It’s touching, beautiful to look at, funny, and obsessed with death. Needless to say, it’s the book for me.

Continued below

East of West #38 ($3.99) – I never know when this book is going to come out, but I never miss it when it does. It’s my only Jonathan Hickman fix right now.

The Wild Storm #15 ($3.99) – I keep going back and forth as to whether I think this or “Eternity Girl” or “Deathstroke” are the best books DC is putting out, but at the end of the day you should be getting all three. “The Wild Storm” is such a fascinating book, because of the way it metes out its story in little bits. I’m not sure I’ve ever read a book like it. It’s juggling a dozen story threads at once and moving each of them forward at a snails pace, but in a good way? We already know it ends at issue #24 and I have no idea how they’re going to reconcile everything they have going on here. Maybe they won’t.

Total: $11.97

Matt Lune’s Picks:

Oh S#!t It’s Kim & Kim #1 ($3.99) – I’m so happy that Mags Visaggio’s Fighting Kims are back! The first series was so much fun, I’m expecting more of the same this time around.

Euthanauts #1 ($3.99) – Now that “Assassinistas” is over, I’m after my next Tini Howard fix, so I’m looking forward to this new Black Crown series, alongside Nick Robles on art.

Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man #307 ($3.99) – I can’t believe that Chip Zdarsky has been on “Spectacular Spider-Man” a whole year already, but I’ve really enjoyed his approach. His work on J. Jonah Jameson has been especially amazing, and I’m hoping he’ll be on this series for a long while yet.

Total: $11.97 – Not a massive week, but what I am picking up looks great.

Nick’s Pick:

Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction, vol 2 ($14.99) – If you follow this column regularly, you’ll notice I’ve been on a manga kick recently. The book that spurred this was “Goodnight Punpun” by Inio Asano, and this week we have the next volume of Asano’s latest series. “Dead Dead Demon” takes the grounded, soul-sucking drama of Asano’s best works, mixes it with his absurd character-focused brand of comedy, and uses that perspective to look at how a slow, mysterious alien invasion would truly feel. In other words, it’s about ordinary horrors and the slow crawl of life, with all its strangeness and dullness and uncertainty. The book really started picking up at the end of the last volume, so this one should be even better.

Total: $14.99.
