Comics Should Be Cheap (7/7/21)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s Picks:

Beasts of Burden: Occupied Territory #4 ($3.99) – Excellent as always. “Beasts of Burden” really deserves more attention. (In other words, check it out!)

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: The Secret of Chesbro House #1 ($3.99) – This one is something special. Not only is it the first time Shawn McManus has drawn a “Hellboy” story, but it’s the first time Christopher Golden has written an actual “Hellboy” comic, even though he’s been writing “Hellboy” stories for over twenty years now. That experience shows.

Basilisk #2 ($3.99) – I was intrigued by the first issue of Cullen Bunn and Jonas Scharf’s new series, and I’m looking forward to diving into #2 to see what’s really going on.

Fie Power #13 ($3.99) – In truth, I’m actually behind on this title and I need to catch up, but Chris Samnee’s art alone (with Matt Wilson’s colors!) makes this title worth it.

Total: $15.99. (Though I’ll likely be picking up more.)

Johnny’s Picks:

The Good Asian #3 ($3.99) – Wow! What a week for comics…lots of great things on the menu! Let’s start with my favorite new book this year, Image Comics’ “The Good Asian,” a hard-nosed detective story with an incredible cast of characters. Writer Pornsak Pichetshote and artist Alexandre Tefenkgi have completely immersed me into the world of 1930’s Chinatown, and it combines all the elements of great noir with a savvy representation of the Asian American experience. A must-read.

X-Men #1 ($4.99) – Gerry Duggan won me over with his turn on “Marauders,” so I’m confident he’s gonna bring the thunder here as well, teaming with superstar Pepe Larraz on the newest flagship in the X-Fleet. Some of my favorite X-men, as well as some surprising choices, too, are sure to make the team dynamics in this book very interesting. Can’t wait!

Batman:The Adventures Continue Season Two #2 ($3.99) – Zatanna and Deadman help Batsy take on Talon, fearless avatar of the Court of Owls. Paul Dini, Alan Burnett, and Ty Templeton are injecting pure nostalgia right into my veins. With that and the “Justice League Infinity” book also out this week, I feel like I have my very own youth-and-vitality-inducing Lazarus Pit at my disposal!

Wonder Girl #2 ($3.99) – Joelle Jones makes great comics. That simple.

Total: $16.96. A tremendous haul this week, and I could have easily listed half a dozen more books!

Christopher’s Picks:

Masters of the Universe: Revelation #1 ($3.99) – As much as I love the new She-Ra, I wouldn’t call myself a He-Man devotee, but I am gonna give the upcoming cartoons a shot, and naturally this prequel to Kevin Smith’s continuation of the original show as well. Both the comic and show look surprisingly pretty, but in their own ways.

America Chavez: Made in the USA #4 ($3.99) – The last issue had a big twist about America’s origin that left many speculating it was being altered in accordance with the MCU. I’m skeptical about that on both fronts — villains gaslight, it’s what they do — but there’s only one way to be sure.

Life is Strange: Coming Home #1 ($5.99) – The girls are back in the oversized antepenultimate issue, which will also introduce True Colors protagonist Alex Chen ahead of the next game — certainly makes the price hike understandable.

Captain America #30 ($3.99) – So long Mr. Coates, and thank you for everything.

Total: $17.96

Kate’s Picks:

The Good Asian #3 ($3.99): Not only is this a great noir series, but this Jen Bartel variant cover is divine.

Skybound X #1 ($4.99): I’m keen to see how this series combines the celebration of a decade of the imprint that brought us “The Walking Dead” and so much more with table setting for the next decade of stories. If the announcements about spinoff series from this are any indication, this is going to be a must-read. (Especially since at present, plans are not to collect this series in trade, so you have to get these while you can.)

Life is Strange Coming Home #1 ($5.99): How I have missed this series, and as we kick off the penultimate chapter of Max and Chloe’s story, how keen I am to see how Emma Vieceli and company wrap up this intricately woven tale.

Total: $14.97. Also on my list though it will take me way over budget is the trade paperback of “Hellboy Universe Essentials” and “American Cult: A Graphic History of Cults in America.” But that’s what birthday money (my birthday was Monday) comes in handy for, right?
