Comics Should Be Cheap! (8/15/2018)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s Picks:

“Gideon Falls” #6 ($3.99)— Only a few pages into the first issue it was clear that “Gideon Falls” was going to go interesting places with the page composition, with how Lemire and Sorrentino choose to tell this story. But it started off gentle. They were holding back. I had this idea in my head that it was going to go absolutely nuts at some point… and boy did they deliver. This issue is exactly the sort of thing I hoped for back when the series launched. This is such a satisfying read.

“Witchfinder: The Gates of Heaven” #4 ($3.99)— Not sure what else I can say about this one. “Witchfinder” continues to be good, and the next issue seems to promise being very good.

“Rumble” Vol. 2 #6 ($3.99)— This arc feels very different right away. Arcudi and Rubín stray from the usual city location, expanding the boundaries of what a “Rumble” story can be. I can’t really say more than that…

“Flavor” #4 ($3.99)— This book is so great! However, I must admit, by the end of each issue, cravings start to set in. In this particular case, it was for crêpes. Fortunately, there’s a crêpe recipe in the back… (and crêpes are fun to make)

Total: $15.96 – A bunch of favorites this week, but they’re favorites for good reason. Seriously, you have to read this week’s “Gideon Falls” though. It’s so good.

Justin Beeson’s Picks:

Batman #53 ($3.99) – This is the best arc of Tom King’s Batman by far. He’s critically analyzing Batman as a concept in the wake of the wedding and it’s riveting. This feels like the King that wrote “The Vision” and “Miracleman.”

Extermination #1 ($4.99) – I really have no desire to add a third Marvel event to my current pull list, but I got back into comics right around the time Bendis brought the original X-Men into the present in “All-New X-Men,” so I want to see if they’re actually going to close the book on that story-line.

Injustice 2 #71 ($0.99) – Don’t sleep on this book; it’s one of the best ongoings DC has right now.

Justice League #6 ($3.99) – This book is bonkers and I love everything Snyder and company are doing.

Pearl #1 ($3.99) – The premise of “an exceptional tattoo artist and accidental assassin for one of the modern-day San Francisco Yakuza” doesn’t sound very interesting, but I’m going to give all of the new Jinxworld titles a try, at least.

Total: $17.95.

Kate’s Picks:

Pearl #1 ($3.99) – Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos, creators of Jessica Jones, team up at DC for their first original character since they left Jess behind, and if it’s anything like the proprietor of Alias Investigations, I’m on board.

Crowded #1 ($3.99) – Fun fantasy series about assassins for hire through apps, or social commentary on our reliance on them to do, well, pretty much anything? Or perhaps a little bit of both?

The Silence of Our Friends ($9.99) – With the sequel to John Lewis’s “March” now delayed to next year, I think this might be a fine substitute to continue exploring the civil rights era, and a complement to the “March” trilogy, and a reminder that even today, finding common ground can save us.

Total: $17.97. It’s Flame Con week, so I have to save some money for the con!

Nick’s Picks:

Sheets OGN ($12.99) – In the family laundromat where she works, a tweenage girl meets a young ghost boy, represented as the classic white sheet with eyeholes, giving both a new perspective on their lives. This line from the solicit sold me: “[The book] proves that second chances are possible whether life feels over or life is over.” Hoping it’ll be as bittersweet as it sounds.

Fence #9 ($3.99) – Things have been heating up in this American take on sports manga.. As the tournament and everyone’s interpersonal drama reaches a climax, I can’t wait to see where things go next.

Total: $16.98.
