Comics Should Be Cheap (8/25/21)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Johnny’s Picks:

Wonder Woman Black & Gold #3 ($5.99) – I was able to finally catch up with this miniseries this past weekend, and after cartoonist Tillie Walden’s dynamite Big Two premiere, a take on Diana that was as much an homage to comics pioneer Winsor McCay as it was to WW herself, I’m definitely going to be putting subsequent issues of this series at the top of the reading pile. It was such a treat to see an artist from outside modern superhero comics take a crack at the character, and with this issue giving us a story from another personal favorite cartoonist, Andrew MacLean, Wednesday can’t come soon enough!

Wonder Girl #3 ($3.99) – Speaking of Wonder Woman and issue threes, mayyyybe my favorite superhero book currently going releases another issue this week – Wonder Girl! Joelle Jones’ line work is just incredible, and without sacrificing thoughtful panel-work and just damned good cartooning. Worth the wait.

Total: $9.98

Kate’s Picks:

Ice Cream Man #25 ($4.99): If you’ve fallen off this title, this is a good place to jump back on. And a plane front and center on the main cover has me wondering if we’re going to have a tribute to some of those classic aviation-centric Twilight Zone episodes, such as “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” or “The Arrival.”

The Women Who Changed Art Forever ($19.99): Outside of comics, modern art is my other passion, having worked at New York’s Museum of Modern Art for seven years. Explore some powerful women artists, including a personal favorite of mine (Judy Chicago) in this new graphic novel.

Total: $24.98. I know I’m over budget (sorry boss), but I skipped last week so I just saved the extra money, so it’s okay. 🙂

Christopher’s Picks:

Winter Guard #1 ($4.99) – Did you enjoy meeting more Russian heroes from their corner of the Marvel Universe in the Black Widow movie? Marvel clearly knew you would, hence this new series by Ryan Cady and Jan Bazaldua that sees Yelena and Alexei on the run from even more of the company’s Russian superheroes. I’m particularly curious to see how just far Cady is allowed to go with topical references to current day Russia.

Transformers: Shattered Glass #1 ($3.99) – The concept of ‘Shattered Glass’ (what if the Autobots were evil and the Decepticons were good) is very familiar to Transformers fans, but I’m sure Danny Lore and Guido Guidi’s series will draw in readers old and new with their post-apocalyptic take on the concept, which appropriately sounds like a twisted mirror image to IDW’s own post-war G1 comics.

Total: $8.98

Mark’s Pick:

Old Head ($16.99) – I’m picking this up on the strength of the concept and on how much I’ve been enjoying Kyle Starks’s writing on “6 Sidekicks of Trigger Keaton.” I mean, Image Comics pitched this as Space Jam meets Fright Night―C’mon, that sounds like fun.

Total: $16.99. Just the one title this week, but it’s a 140-page OGN, so it’s getting me more comic pages than five individual comic issues would.
