Comics Should Be Cheap! (8/29/2018)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Vince’s Picks:

“Tank Girl All Stars” #3 ($3.99)— “Tank Girl All Stars” is more of an anthology series than the recent run of miniseries from Alan Martin and Brett Parson, though their fantastic synergy is definitely still found here. I was surprised and delighted to find that a lot of the material here comes in a variety of styles and tones that remind me more of the really early days of Tank Girl. This series contains multitudes.

“Euthanauts” #2 ($3.99)— Another home run from Tini Howard, with wonderfully evocative art from Nick Robles. She’s 2 for 2 with IDW Black Crown books.

“Red Hood and the Outlaws Annual” #1 ($4.99)— Look, I’m as surprised as you are, but Scott Lobdell’s 2nd volume of “Red Hood and the Outlaws” has been tremendous superhero comic booking. I found his first volume, featuring a horny Starfire and a bro-tastic Roy Harper to be mostly forgettable and even downright schlock at times, but that couldn’t be further from the case now. A tight new supporting cast has refreshed the property and seems to have given Lobdell a new approach with Artemis and Bizarro (sometimes Brainy) Superman providing far more heart than the first volume ever had. I know DC’s “Annuals” aren’t always necessarily reflective of the ongoing title they correspond to, but based on the solid track record of this series, I’d give it a chance if I were you.

Total: $12.97

Matt Lune’s Picks:

“Beyonders” #1 ($3.99)— Cryptography, a treasure hunt and a Welsh Corgi all in one book? Sign me up.

“Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Shattered Grid” #1 ($7.99)— There are big changes coming in Boom’s MMPR universe, and it all starts here.

“X-Men: Grand Design – Second Genesis” #2 ($5.99)— Ed Piskor is creating nothing short of a masterpiece here, one that will be read for years. Pick up these issues and drink in the history.

“Marvel Two-In-One” #9 ($3.99)— Now that “Fantastic Four” is back proper, I’m interested to see where this story goes. First though, Ben and Johnny need to escape the powerless predicament they’re in.

Total: $21.96 – A little over $20, but these books are expensive.

Justin Beeson’s Picks:

“Extermination” #2 ($3.99)— I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the first issue of this series. Both Marvel’s events and the X-Men books have not really piqued my interest at all lately, so this was completely unexpected. I’m in for the whole thing now.

“Runaways” #12 ($3.99)— “Runways” may be Marvel’s most consistent book, quality-wise. It does the original justice, while expanding on the universe in interesting ways.

“X-Men: Grand Design – Second Genesis” #2 ($5.99)— It seems like the enthusiasm has wavered a little for this book since the first series, but it’s still amazing, and a must-read for anyone even remotely interested in the X-Men.

“Lex Luthor / Porky Pig Special” #1 ($4.99)— I really have no desire to read any more of these Looney Tunes crossovers, but I’ll give any Mark Russell penned book a try after “The Flintstones.”

Total: $18.96 – It was surprisingly easy to come under the limit this week for some reason, which is the first time that’s happened for me in forever.

Mark’s picks:

“Isola” #5 ($3.99)— The first arc of “Isola” comes to an end. I can’t really talk about what I liked about this one without spoiling it. Needless to say, the book continues to be gorgeous, and the Rook–Olwyn relationship is even moreso. “Isola” will return in January 2019.

“Blackwood” #4 ($3.99)— Another series wrapping up its first arc. While there’s no firm date for the next one, Evan Dorkin has confirmed that they’ve got the greenlight for more, which is certainly good news. Four issues was not nearly enough time to spend in this world.

Total: $7.98 – A slight week for me, which is probably just as well since I went over last week.
