Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kate’s Picks:

Skybound X #5 ($4.99): It’s the final issue, so make sure to get your hands on this, and any of the previous four if you missed them.

I Survived: Attacks of September 11, 2001 ($10.99): This year marks the 20th anniversary of 9/11, and as the generation that didn’t live through the attacks grows, it’s time to ensure they do not forget this pivotal piece of history.

Deadpool Black White and Blood #1 ($4.99): The ever colorful Wade Wilson goes black and white (with some blood) but he’ll still be as colorful as ever.

Total: $20.97

Brian’s Picks:

Not All Robots #1 ($3.99) – In this house, Mark Russell first issues get read and, usually, so do all the other installments. This title made me laugh out loud, so it’s already off to a good start. Also, the title is even funnier if you pronounce it ‘rah-bits,’ like a 1950s sci-fi film.

Nice House on the Lake #3 ($3.99) – This James Tynion IV and Alvaro Martinez Bueno comic is among the most intriguing and engrossing starts to a series in some time. The book is worth the cover price for the art alone, but Tynion has really crafted something special and unique here. This is highly recommended for fans of horror in any form.

Star Wars War Of The Bounty Hunters 4-LOM And Zuckuss #1 ($4.99) – Has this event sputtered out a bit? Yes, yes it has. Is this still a 4-Lom and Zuckuss comic? Yes, yes it is. Will I still read it? Yes, yes I will.

Total: $12.97

Luke’s Picks:

The Swamp Thing #6 ($3.99) – After a very enjoyable detour in issue #5, the main story of “The Swamp Thing” is set to continue this week and while I’m a little cynical about the Suicide Squad involvement that’s likely only due to their new film, I have faith that Ram V, Mike Perkins, Mike Spicer, and Aditya Bidikar will deliver a solid issue.

Transformers: King Grimlock #1 ($4.99) – I can’t say I’m the most knowledgeable Transformers fan, but the concept for this series – Grimlock in a magical world – just seems too good not to check out.

The Me You Love in the Dark #1 ($3.99) – I was a big, big fan of “Middlewest,” so whatever its creative team’s next project was, I was likely to at least have a look at it, but a haunted house story? Count me in.

Blade Runner 2029 #6 ($3.99) – I’ll be buying this issue to keep aside until I have the entire arc, but I love how this series continues to tell its own story whilst incorporating significant events from the time between the two Blade Runner films.

Total: $16.96.

Christopher’s Picks:

Operation Dragon ($14.99) – Dinosaurs! In the Pacific War! Haha! I’m not familiar with the creative team, apart from veteran Marvel artist Germán Peralta, but I’m definitely giving this a flip through at the very least, and I like that the dinosaurs are an Imperial Japanese scheme, instead of a typical, mad Nazi scientist plot.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation #2 ($3.99) – So while we wait for the second half of the Netflix series to drop, we can continue to enjoy what He-Man, Teela and co. go up to before his final battle. Having seen the show now, it’s gonna be interesting to find out whether my brain is now hearing Mark Hamill as Skeletor, or if it’s still the classic, nasal voice design.

Total: $18.98

Mark’s Pick:

Steeple – Volume 2: The Silvery Moon ($19.99) – There are a lot of great books coming out this week, but if I have to stay under $20, then there’s only one I’m picking up. You probably already know John Allison’s work from “Giant Days” (and if not, you need to remedy that immediately) or “Bad Machinery.” If you liked either of those titles, this is an absolute must. The new volume collects a pair of webcomics from 2020 (‘The Silvery Moon’ and ‘Secret Sentai’) that continued on from where the original miniseries left off, with Bille joining the Church of Satan and Maggie joining the Anglican Church. But don’t worry, they’re still friends. I’ve been waiting for the print edition, so I don’t know what to expect. Hopefully we’ll see the return of everyone’s favourite hexed Dyson. I’m really looking forward to seeing Maggie being chaotically good and Billie working on her Satanic arts and crafts.

Total: $19.99. I’m also picking up “The Golem Walks Among Us!” #1, “Lucky Devil” #1, “Basilisk” #3, and “Fire Power” #14. And let’s be honest, probably a bunch more.

Johnny’s Pick:

The Good Asian #4 ($3.99) – Only one book really on my radar this week (sorry X-Mens), and that’s Pichetshote and Tefenkgi’s brilliant Chinatown noir. While it certainly isn’t breaking any new ground in the genre, the interesting cast of characters and the time and location the series depicts invite us into an overlooked section of U.S. history. Plus, any book with engaging back-matter (“The Good Asian” has both essays and a letter col), usually piques my interest.

Total: $3.99. If you have the extra $$ – go grab Jaime Hernandez’s women’s pro-wrestling book “Queen of the Ring,” too! I know I will be!
