Comics Should Be Cheap! (8/8/2018)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kevin’s Picks:

Fantastic Four #1 ($5.99) – I can’t tell you that I have read all the great Fantastic Four stories. I can’t tell you I know all the great runs. I can’t give you all the history with the ‘First Family’ that I would love to be able to. I just know, perceptually, whether you dig them or not, it feels right that the family is back together and here to stay.

The Sandman Universe #1 ($4.99) – Welcome to the age of 90’s nostalgia, everything that was great then is trying to be good again now. DC, Vertigo, and Neil Gaiman have dipped back into the ethereal Dreaming and plucked four new books all spun out of this one-shot. I’m so excited I can finally have my emo phase at 23.

Eternity Girl #6 ($3.99) – I am going to miss the hell out of this book. Mags Visaggio and Sonny Liew gave us something that will stand the test of time and has been one of the best comics I’ve ever read. I need to know how it ends, but I don’t want to see it go.

Catwoman #2 ($3.99) – The first issue of this book was one of the best issues I’ve read recently, and with Laura Allred’s colors and that new paper that DC is printing comics on, this book is gorgeous. Joelle Jones is one of the best, and this continues to be an inspired choice.

Total: $18.96

Kate’s Picks:

Eternity Girl #6 ($3.99) – Another one of the Young Animal titles wraps up this week, and I’m sad to see it go. It provided another look at mental illness that is not often seen in media.

Sandman Universe #1 ($4.99) – Reboots are all the rage in TV these days, and I for one am starting to get reboot fatigue. (Do we really need an ALF reboot? Probably not.) But this reboot of sorts of the “Sandman” universe takes it in a new direction, so color me intrigued.

Hey Kids! Comics! #1 ($3.99) – This looks to have some good fun gossip within the pages along with comic history, and I’m all here for it.

Hot Lunch Special #1 ($3.99) – In New York City, you live and die by the cheap food carts outside your office. What if people literally died for the crown of best food truck gyro in Lower Manhattan? That’s “Hot Lunch Special.”

Fantastic Four #1 ($5.99) – Marvel’s First Family is back, and it would be sacrilegious not to include it on this list, even at nearly $6.

Total: $22.95. A little over, but that “Fantastic Four” should be worth it. I hope.

Nick’s Picks:

What Did You Eat Yesterday? vol 13($12.99) – A slice-of-life manga about a gay couple in their 40s bonding over dinner each night. The two characters are such great foils for each other, and I love the exploration of issues unique to male-male relationships. Yoshinaga also takes care to depict the social aspect of eating, and she puts great detail into explaining each meal from the cook’s perspective. I just read the first volume so it’ll probably be a while until I get to the thirteenth, but I loved it enough to want to highlight it here.

Black Badge #1 ($3.99) – I’ve always wanted to follow a Matt Kindt series monthly, and black ops boy scouts sounds exactly like the kind of thing he’d do well. Excited to jump into this world!

Total: $16.97.
